Feb 28, 2021 - Beautiful sunshine

The last 3 days have been magnificent - beautiful sunshiny days, just a bit cool if there's a breeze. We've been able to sit out the back again and enjoy fresh air and soak up the vitamin D. WE had our first Covid Vaccinations on Friday - all went very smoothly, they have a very good system running. It's set up underneath the grandstand at the Newbury Racecourse, so in one side and out the other side. Didn't feel the needle at all and we just had a sore spot where the needle went in, which has now subsided. We now have to wait around until...

Feb 22, 2021 - Milder weather

We walked along the path through the Avebury Estate yesterday. The sheep have had a great feast in this turnip field. The days are not so cold at the moment but the tow path is still very sloppy and hard to manouver. We have had a fair bit of rain so the river is up and breaking it's banks. This lovely mass of snowdrops is like a blanket under the trees.

Feb 20, 2021 - The Vaccination Saga

There are some lovely spring flowers appearing along our walking tracks now. The weather is slowly improving although we have had quite a lot of rain over the last few days. Our "refo pack" from Australia has arrived and we are enjoying some treats (tim tams and things we can't get here) After some messing around we have now got appointments to have our 1st Covid-19 vaccination jabs next Friday. It's been a bit of a saga but we appear to have it organised. I'll try to explain the system here without getting too confusing!!!! (probably...

Feb 11, 2021 - Baby it's cold outside!!!

On Monday it was very misty and the cobwebs were very visible. The towpath was also very, very sloppy, it was hard work getting to the next bridge. We've had a few days of light flurries of snow and overnight frost. The overnight temperatures have been well below 0. The canal was covered in a film of light ice this morning. This poor lady lorry driver had to negotiate the parked cars as she turned the corner - the van behind her was so close she had no room to reverse. Tony guided her through the parked cars which made it a bit easier for...

Feb 5, 2021 - Will we make it????

It rained on and off all morning, then suddenly the sun appeared and there was lovely blue sky, so we decided to leg it. Would we make it back without getting drowned? The answer is yes we did, and although it threatened a couple of times it clouded over and then blew over. So we had a lovely walk mostly in sunshine. We didn't have many other walkers to contend with which made it even more enjoyable.

Feb 2, 2021 - Finally, snow

Finally it started snowing again on Sunday afternoon, however, it only lasted a couple of hours and didn't settle on the ground. It sat on the ducks backs for a while though. Since then it's poured with rain so there are great puddles along the path and lots of instances of flooding around the country. It's quite mild today but the sky is very dark and it looks like some heavy weather is on the way....

Jan 30, 2021 - Waiting for more snow

This Pheasant was just sitting on top of a nearby boat as we walked along the path the other day. These 2 strange looking machines have been out along the canal cleaning up the reeds. The fellow that was working them also designed them himself. We've had quite a lot of rain over the last couple of days which has caused the river to break it's banks, and the pathway down to the river is mostly deep puddles and mud, but we slopped through it this morning for our walk....

Jan 26, 2021 - BBQ in the snow

WE had our traditional Australia Day bbq tonight -Tony nearly froze to death but the meal was delicious. A bloke walked past with his dog and headlight hat on whilst Tony was cooking and I think he thought we were crazy - didn't say much, just hello!! It wasn't snowing whilst he was out there but just as he finished a few flakes fell. It poured with rain overnight and early this morning but it didn't melt the snow very much so the snow that was already on the path was very slippery with puddles sitting on top of it. So we just did "a...

Jan 24, 2021 - A fairy snow kingdom

We awoke to beautiful scenery this morning. And there were heaps of people out for their walk along the snowy towpath, which has turned to sloshy, muddy snow. The forecast is for more snow today and it's looking a bit grey at present so we just may get some more. We had decided to reverse up to the water point but when Tony walked down to the tap at around 10am it was frozen, so decided to go for a walk and check the tap on the way back. When we arrived back at the tap there was a boat there filling up so it had unfrozen and we just waited...

Jan 22, 2021 - Frosty but sunny

An icy, frosty but sunny start to the day. We set of for a decent walk to Hampstead Marshall. The sign says it's 2 miles (3.2kms) from the village and we have about 1/2 mile to walk from the boat to the village. The sun shone until we reached Hampstead Marshall, which has nothing but a few houses and a couple of farms to it's name along the main road. There is a church in one direction and a village hall in the other direction, but it had clouded over and we had a few spots of rain so we didn't do any exploring, and headed back to...

Jan 16, 2021 - A walk in the sun

A lot of nature pics today. A lovely walk in the sunshine and it's quite mild. (just over 5km). We walked on the public footpath that goes through the Avington Estate which is a very large estate and is most known for it's fishing. The River Kennet runs through the estate and there are some large lakes - we were told by a fisherman that a licence to fish in their lakes is £3000 per year!!!! (you'd have to be keen - just to catch a fish and then throw it back in again!) It was a bit disappointing though, to follow the path and suddenly...

Jan 11, 2021 - Drizzle

Tony bought me this lovely jigsaw for Christmas and I've just completed it. I intend to have it framed when we get back to Oz. the snowdrops are appearing in the Church yard. The newt ponds were our destination today, now unfrozen but no sign of any life. the rate things are going we will still be here in the summer and will get to see it all looking pretty and maybe see a newt or 2. The virus is spiralling in this country and we are lucky to be so isolated on the boat/canal, even though we complain about the walkers etc. on the towpath...
