Sep 29, 2015 - Scotland - Gretna Green

Happy 10th Anniversary (or should I say 9 years and 11 months)!!!! This morning I was up early to pack for our trip to Scotland. Carl has got the car already for us to drive - so should have no issues. Eat breaky - make sure I have all my travel documents - George helps me set the GPS and we are off. We left at 9.30am, don't need to be there until 3.00pm and according to GPS it only takes 2 1/2 hours - we can take things nice and easy. By about 11ish we are ready for a coffee so stop at the next services - fuel up car - have coffee and...

Aug 17, 2015 - Gretna Green and Hadrian's Wall

August 17-Gretna Green and Hadrian’s Wall We picked up our rental car without incident and I jumped in and off we went on the wrong side of the road. I mean, I was on the right side of the road for where we were, but it is the wrong side of the road. I managed, though, and we exited out of Glasgow and hotfotted it south. Susan and I each had something on our must do list for today. For her it was to stop and see the marrying anvil at Gretna Green. Apparently in 1754 in England young couples under 21 could not be married without their...

Jun 28, 2015 - Larkhall to Gretna Green

Sunday today. Our host at Carlin Guesthouse, Sheila, did not want to get up too early! Best we could negotiate was a 9am breakfast. With a long day ahead, not ideal but the sleep in & late start probably did us the world of good. Headed off from Larkhall at 9.30. Sheila informed us Larkhall is the largest Village in the UK. Dylan's comment on heading outside - 'There's the sky we know and love!' Ah yes, overcast and drizzly. It was undulations today. We were riding through rural Southern Scotland. Rolling green hills, farms, wind farms &...

Jun 28, 2015 - End of week 1

700kms in 7 days! 900 -1000km to go. We're finding the days are tending to be 10km longer on average than google tells us :-( Is it google,is it our cycle computers, are we riding in circles? Don't know but it's a bit disheartening at the end of a long day. Plug for Dylan - he's fund-raising for The Lady Clients Children's Hospital. He's doing awesome riding these distances. Visit his fund-raising site and show him some support. Http://childrenshospitalfoundation.everydayhero.com/au/Dylan Any suggestions out there for travelling games. 'i...

Jul 21, 2013 - Gretna Green

WE had entered quickest route to York into Sally's and Gretna instructions and ended up coming back to the road we had gone up on. Worth the drive as the area between our hotel in Basingate was back to rolling hills and farming. Very scenic. We needed a break so Gretna was it. Jennie remembered it was very tacky. Its now very slick as well as tacky! Its still 'in the family'. SO the great-great-whatever-grandfather who started marrying eloping couples in his blacksmiths shop must be very proud of his descendent who must be raking in a...

Jul 31, 2012 - Dalbeattie and Gretna Green

Yesterday we left Culzean late morning and drove down the south-west coast of Scotland to Stranrear. The scenery reminded us of the New Zealand coastline in the South Island. It started off fine but soon began to rain, so we just stopped on the side of the road for a quick lunch in Homer before continuing on to Dalbeattie. We stayed again at the Glenearly campsite (DG5 4NE), and it was sunny again so we had a relaxing late afternoon, and a nice chicken dinner. Today we headed for Greta Green, and enjoyed walking around the Old Blacksmith’s...
