Jun 12, 2019 - Birmingham, UK, that is........

Birmingham: I really don’t have very much to say about it. I had included a couple of days in Birmingham in hopes of catching up with some cousins from my Dad’s side of our family who live in the area, but that didn’t happen. So, we had a couple of days to kill here. And it rained, and it rained and it rained! We are awash, sloshing around in water! On the first day here we put on our Tourist Game Faces and squelched around with our heads down and umbrella high but I rarely brought out my camera from its waterproof cover – not that there...

May 28, 2019 - Arrival in England at Gatwick

Usual disclaimer: I write my travel journal primarily for my own personal use so a casual reader might wonder why I go into detail about some things that might seem mundane. If you’re not interested in the amount I write you can just look at the pictures because they also tell the journey. I am happy to share my observations, photos etc. with anyone who is interested and it seems some people are because I have had lovely, positive comments from many people which are very much appreciated. I also write about details that might be of use to...

Sep 30, 2018 - Villa Verde, Horley

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD We were delighted to get into our room at the hotel a couple of hours early, and with our tummies full from the breakfast on the plane, we changed into our pajamas and went off to sleep for a couple of hours. It’s always wonderful to stretch out flat after a long flight – thank goodness for the blackout curtains in our room. It was only 1:30pm London time. Our host suggested a couple of nearby restaurants for dinner, and even gave us a discount card for an Italian eatery, but Anil discovered a 16th-century pub...

Sep 30, 2018 - Gatwick, England

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD The flight to Gatwick was very comfortable and seemed remarkably shorter than the one we took around the same time last year. That was probably because this one had only one stop in transit (Vancouver) and the previous one had two (Calgary and Toronto). We had remembered the great meal we were served on Westjet in premium economy, and so decided to travel with them once again. Anil had a few interactions with the steward in our cabin, and they seemed to get on well. He had trouble getting his seat to recline, and...

Nov 5, 2017 - Remember the 5th of November

Not having been killed by werewolves I woke in the Inn on the moors. I ate breakfast downstairs. As usual to make hef life marginally easier the waitress puts me next to the only other people in the restaurant. My day would be bookended by sitting next to British gits dressing down women loudly at the table next to mine as I waited for food. Americans eat meals in 2 minutes. Europeans say it's because we don't know how to enjoy life. Mostly it's to avoid sitting next to loud European men who don't need to order that fourth glass of wine....

Oct 8, 2017 - Gatwick

@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND Here’s some of what Wikipedia has to say about Gatwick Airport: Gatwick is a major international airport in southeast England, 29.5 miles (47.5 km) south of Central London. It is the second-busiest airport by total passenger traffic in the United Kingdom, after London Heathrow. Gatwick is the eighth-busiest airport in Europe. Until 2016, it was the busiest single-use runway airport in the world before being overtaken by Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. Gatwick opened as an aerodrome in the late 1920s,...

Jan 4, 2017 - Flying To Orlando

Shuttle bus back to the airport at 9am & the usual queues to drop our suitcases & then get through security to the departure lounge. Easy 9hr flight with lots of seatback entertainment to ease the journey, arriving at Orlando at 3.45pm local time (8.45pm UK). Eventually made it through long immigration lines & collected our suitcases & headed off to make our way by bus & train to the Orlando train station. Lovely & warm here in Orlando with temperature in the mid 70s. I had booked & paid for our rail passes & booked our tickets for the...

Jun 10, 2013 - Going to Cornwall

Gatwick waiting 20 mins for airport security to come to take handover papers and so let us out of the plane into the terminal. Another 20 + to walk to border control. Through that within 10 (must be a record?) Picked up by B&B car Had trouble sleeping without rocking boat and noise of engine! After a big full English breakfast it was off to the station and with Jenny and Bevans 'how to' information, got myself a Senior rail card. The girl said she was going to get me through fast so I didnt miss train to Reading as it went only once an...

Sep 10, 2012 - Recollections of War and Packing Woes

We went across to the airport for breakfast this morning and Christine got some things she needed as well. We returned to the hotel and I got ready and left for London. Christine spent the day reading, doing puzzles, talking to the maid and watching teams leave after the Para-olympic Games.. I went over to the airport and took the shuttle to the other terminal. The place was busy and the police were out in force with their automatic weapons. I checked out where we would be checking in tomorrow then went to the station to buy my ticket for...

Sep 9, 2012 - Starting for home

We were up early today and had breakfast then finished our packing and set off for the bus to take us to the airport. We could not see our flight on the board and we discovered from Information the EasyJet had a separate section of the terminal, so we walked over to it. We were in plenty time, and had a seat and read and did puzzles then went into the departure area and waited. Our plane was a little late, but we were boarded and on our way. Christine waited till the plane was preparing for landing to fall asleep. We got into the airport...

Aug 1, 2009 - Gatwick to Orlando

What can I say, Trevor said to me "if you are going to Disney, go with Virgin, fly from Gatwick and fly Upper Economy," perfect advice, huge thumbs up for that route and would definately use Virgin again. Also book the Virgin lounge when you book the flight, dont book the breakfast in the hotel, then spend as long as you want in the lounge, excellent quality and more room than sitting downstairs in the main lounge waiting with everone else.
