Jun 7, 2018 - Walking tour of Manchester

We did a 3 hour walking tour of Manchester today - our guide Ben was very informative. This drink was created to try to stop alcoholism in the early 1900's when the water was nasty and the only other alternative was booze! It was originally a cordial but is now a fizzy drink and is very refreshing, tasting very similar to Creamy Soda. The ingredients were, grapes, blueberries, strawberries and vanilla bean. The bees painted on the walls of this pub (22 in all), represent the lives lost in the Manchester bombing last year. There are...

Jun 6, 2018 - Trains and boats and planes (and bicycles!!)

Last night, after doing a u turn at the winding hole just out of Lymm, we moored at Stretford on the outskirts of Manchester. We were right under the flight path for the Manchester Airport, the train line into Manchester runs alonside the canal and the boats were still going past us at a great rate, not to mention that you take your life into your hands when you try to walk along the towpath where the hundreds of cyclists ride at a million miles an hour. Not happy Jan!!!!!!!!! So after getting some diesel at the nearby marina we set off...

Jan 15, 2017 - Jan 15, travel to Bangkok.

Sunday Jan 15th. Finally arrived in Bangkok after what seems like an eternity of travelling! Saturday started early as we attempted to reset our body clocks by getting up at 4am - well at least one of us did. The first four hours of the day turned out to be very stressful as first my computer appeared to have a catastrophic failure, and then for no reason at all I suddenly had a severe lower back spasm which saw me on all fours and unable to move. Thankfully the computer seemed to right itself after about two hours of the dreaded "blue...

Jan 13, 2017 - The day before!

The time has finally come as we set off tomorrow morning for Thailand and Hong Kong. We are doing a ten day organised trip with G-Adventures, starting in Bangkok and making our way north to Chiang Mai where we have three days trekking in the villages and staying with the locals. After that we head to Hong Kong for a few days on our own before flying back home. This is a holiday we have looked forward to for some time, and if it is as good as the G-Adventure trip we did in India it is going to be fantastic.

May 26, 2016 - Manchester

We slept quite well and woke around 6.00am. We then joined Xavier for breakfast in the hotel restaurant at 7.00am and planned our day. The first order of the day was a visit to the mall to pick up a few items, followed by a stop at a tanning salon to check out options for Barb prior to the competition. The walk to the mall took about 15 minutes - a good way to get the blood flowing. It was still very overcast with a thin veil of drizzle and it was a chilly 10 degrees, so no sign yet of the British summer. Barb picked up a few warm tops and...

Thackers Go Fourth

May 25, 2016 - Getting There

Background: At the suggestion of their dance coach, Barb and her dance partner, Xavier, will be competing in the Senior Latin dance competition at Blackpool on Monday 30th June. Clearly it wasn't worth going that far without taking some time to visit some old haunts and discover some new ones. We therefore find ourselves setting off on our first long-haul flight for several years. Our itinerary will see us travelling on Singapore Airlines from Auckland to Manchester UK via Singapore and Munich. From Manchester we'll train to Blackpool, then...

Merry Christmas to everyone. We are spending a few days in Manchester with Julie and Giles getting used to being looked after! They have sorted the house brilliantly and made it feel very festive and have done us proud with a fabulous Christmas dinner. Giles' parents are here as well as his brother and family making it a real family gathering. It is a long time since we have spent Christmas with young children which is making it very special.

Sep 10, 2015 - Adventure day 13 - Manchester MCFC Tour

I can't believe it is almost mid September - where has the time gone??? Today we have a reasonably early start as we are off to Manchester for MCFC ground tour. We must be all excited - we are all wearing Man City shirts - bahahaha. First stop though is the phone shop in Lincoln so George can drop her phone off to be fixed. They told her it just needs the screen to be replaced and it will only take half hour - so we decide to wait for it (she feels like her right arm is cut off - hehehehe). We call into the travel agent and get our final...

Aug 30, 2015 - Adventure day 2 - Lincoln

Up at 5.00am to catch the 6.00am train to the airport - can't wait to get out of Copenhagen - so angry. The station at the airport arrives right at the terminal we need to be at - so off the train and up the elevator and bang - we are at check-in. Now here you have to self check-in and the machine spits out your boarding pass and luggage tags. Then you attach your luggage tags and take your section of the label. Then over to the bag drop area - and again it is all self-service............you put your luggage on the conveyor belt and scan...

Apr 24, 2015 - Day 8. Barcelona to Manchester.

Day 8. 22/4/15. Up early and checked in at airport in plenty of time. Farewelled Barcelona by having hot chocolate and chorizo. Yum! Barcelona is the best city ever, even though we found all the cobblestones underfoot a tad rough to walk on all day! Don, I need to buy some safety pins to take in my pants..yeah!!! With some difficulty we had packed our wheeled carry case in port as they were 2cm bigger than legal size. Why do we always have to do the right thing? There were plenty of much bigger ones than ours allowed on the plane! Not a...

Sep 10, 2014 - Wonderful English countryside

Left Glasgow for a short ride to the Scotland/England border to Gretna Green where long, long ago people who couldn't get permission to be wed in Scotland would go here to elope. The blacksmith usually was the witness. Wonderful little tourist trap but cute. First photo is at a farm we visited and saw regular farm animals but also these highland cattle. The family invites us all into their home for lunch. It was wonderful. Meat pies, salmon mouse, sausages and lots more plus sticky pudding, trifle and fruit merange. Off thru the English...
