Apr 27, 2004 - Across the Channel on €1

I love this discount airline thing. 45€ to London and back with Ryan Air. I caught the bus to Victoria and am staying with David and Susan and baby in their very nice Chelsea flat. Spent a long time in the V&A today, because it really is so good. They have all these interactive thingys like design your own coat of arms and braid a medieval thingy and something else which was good too. Boring to relate is that I also visited the Natural History museum, Hyde Park and the Peter Pan statue.

Apr 26, 2004 - London, England

We arrived in London - The Big Smoke - in the early afternoon and proceeded to where we were to stay for the first couple of nights: with Katherine, the aunt of a friend of Martin's. As it turns out, she lives in a great apartment located not five minutes walk from St. Paul's Cathedral in the heart of what was Old London, now a financial core of England's capital city (thank you Katherine!). On the first evening, we walked down to have a look at St. Paul's, as it is lit up at night. While the lighting made for a spectacular display, the...

World Trip 03/04

Apr 22, 2004 - Amsterdam/London

Out of Amsterdam early as this was the last day of the tour and we were just going to spend it all on the bus on the way back to London. Stopped briefly on the border of the Netherlands and Belgium (by the way...we spent about two hours driving through Belgium without stopping so if the tour company is including that as one of the countries we visit I want my money prorated) for a lunch that was so early none of us were hungry and then arrived in Calais to catch the ferry just before 2:00. Now, for the most part, I think our tour manager...

Colin's World Tour

Apr 1, 2004 - Brisbane/Bangkok/Hong Kong/London

Left Brisbane at 10:30 local time, which felt like 12:30, and headed to Bangkok. This flight was, mercifully, only about nine hours. I watched the movie, 'Cheaper by the Dozen' with Steve Martin, and tried to sleep. I like the aisle because it allows me some shoulder room but it can be miserable with all the people walking by throughout the flight. Finally made it to Bangkok at about 5:00 am local time and tried to check in for my flight to Hong Kong. Unfortunately, though, it was too early as my flight didn't leave until 10:00. So, after...

This morning we went into London on the train. We departed at 9.45 am and arrive at London Liverpool Street a couple of hours later. To get to Boston Manor it was necesssary to change to the Piccadilly Line at Holborn. We headed for Boston Manor where Lorraine's future son-in-law Peter Beck works at West London Nissan, and purchased a 2001 Nissan Almera 5 door hatch,...

The Big Chill

Jan 27, 2004 - Visit the RHS garden Wisley

Visited Wisley and met with David Jewell and Colin Crosbie. Saw the original specimens of Hamamelis x intermedia 'Pallida' and 'Wisley Supreme'. 'Pallida' was consistently impressive in every garden we visited. Even the old specimen at Wisley is brilliant in full flower. We were impressed both by Wisley's scope and by the attention to detail.

Jan 26, 2004 - Visit Kew Gardens

Met Tony Kirkham at Kew and saw remarkeable specimens of Hamamelis mollis from 1900. These are probably seedlings from Charles Maries' expedition for the Veitch Nursery Co. Collected Hamamelis mollis, Hamamelis japonica, and Hamamelis x intermedia - all in full flower. It seems all the more meaningful collecting one of each of these from Kew, an institution so well known for plant exploration and introduction.

Jan 23, 2004 - Travel to London

No problems with the airline flight. Did have to remove our shoes and have our bags examined. Difficult to sleep on the plane but arrived to beautiful weather - clear sunny skies and mild temperatures. We're off to our first destination - the collection of Chris Lane.

Dec 8, 2003 - Leaving London, UK - arriving Thailand.

Wish we had a photo to show you how nervous and exhausted we were when we set off for the airport on the evening of 8th December! All had been crazy, and poor ole Paul had spent most of the last week in London at work and so was unable to do all the bits and pieces for the trip that he had needed to do. So, not alot of sleep but a fair amount of emotion when we had to say goodbye to the Holloways! Jamie took us to the airport and my best bud Kola turned up too, to see us off. Check in queue was hugely long and tiring and once sorted, we sat...

Wedding bliss

Nov 22, 2003 - Flight Delayed

Well, we thought that we had got to the airport in plenty of time to watch the Rugby World Cup final, which was due to kick off at 9 a.m. Our flight was due to leave at 11:30 a.m. so we thought no problem and we had pre-booked a lounge with Sky Sports to ensure that we would be able to watch it. At 11 a.m., just as extra time was due to start, there was the last call for our flight. We ran to the gate and luckily we found a bloke there with a handheld 3 inch portable telly with about 20 other people crowded round him. Sarah joined the queue...

May 25, 2003 - Adios amigos!

Well here we go, off on the big trip. Thought we'd start off with a couple of snaps of what we're taking with us. Yes all of Cara's clothes are in the two bags in the middle and yes I am taking a bit more than the couple of T-shirts and shorts that I originally planned. By the time most of you read this you'll be in the office on Tuesday morning and we'll be arriving in Rio (sorry couldn't resist!) Thanks for all your best wishes over the last few weeks, we're gonna miss ya! A couple of days relaxing on Ipanema beach should help us to get...
