Jan 16, 2018 - Rain

After some heavy overnight rain the river was fair gushing along No stepping stones today!! While out walking we read the local notices and saw that the Gargrave Bell Ringers were practising on Monday evenings. So we walked down after dinner, climbed the narrow spiral stone stairs up the bell tower. There we spent an hour and a half watching 6 ringers do their thing. Very interesting. And talking to one old fellow in his 80's, Digby, he told me he had travelled to Australia and New Zealand in the 1990's on a bell ringing holiday - he's...

Jan 14, 2018 - Gargrave

2 1/2 hours, 1 swing gate, 4 bridges and 3 locks later we are at Gargrave. In the lock with one gate open and one shut We made it under all the bridges with room to spare, which made the journey a bit easier not having to take down the wheelhouse. Lunch eaten, we rugged up again and went off for a walk - Tony thought I was going to walk across these stepping stones!! I told him he had another think coming!! haha More snowdrops have raised their heads here. We walked as far as the railway station - we can catch a train to Morecombe...

Jan 13, 2018 - Holme Bridge 53º58.65N 2º04.65W

After 4 weeks in Skipton we decided it was time to move on a bit. So we filled up with water this morning and then travelled for just under 2 hours to get to Holme Bridge just before Gargrave, So we're that bit further from Leeds, And that bit closer to Liverpool. There are a lot of canal repair works going on at present before the cruising season begins and so we won't get too much further until they finish at the end of February, but there is still plenty to do and see along the way. After mooring up and having some nice hot soup for...

Jan 11, 2018 - A day out

We rented a car again today to go to Marjories for some mail. Got the train at 9.20 and from Leeds Station walked to the Hertz shop. Off we went - each time we've gone to Marjories we've passed this rather high communications tower - Today I managed to get a picture (last time we passed it was shrouded in mist and only a very small portion of the bottom was showing) It is Emley Moor Transmitting Station. A 329m high concrete job which was opened in January, 1971 replacing a 385m mast which collapsed in 1969 after a strong snow...

Jan 7, 2018 - Slippy again

The canal was a bit icy this morning, but the sun was shining. It was a bit slippery while on our walk, We walked up behind the castle and into the woods again. A different path to last week, and this seat was covered in frost - didn't try sitting on it - thought we might get stuck!! The snowdrops are just raising their heads - these woods are going to look beautiful when all the bluebells are in bloom. We went along the back side of the castle this time Some serious rocks here

Jan 6, 2018 - out for a walk

Yesterday was our 44th wedding anniversary, so we went to dinner at the Cantonese restaurant just around the corner. After a feed of veggie spring rolls, sizzling pepper beef and special fried rice, this was my dessert. Very yummy brownie ice cream. We took advantage of the lovely sunshine after lunch today and went for a walk along the canal path. The fields are still quite flooded At first glance this silver birch tree appeared to be full of bird nests, but closer observation proved it to just be some sort of growths. The tow path is...

Jan 4, 2018 - It's raining

We caught the bus into Keithley yesterday to organise internet. This photo taken from the bus is of farmer Brown's field flooded with the rain - not dams, not creeks or rivers, just water sitting in the fields. It was worse a bit further down the road. we've had more rain overnight and it's still coming down now, so the fields will be covered completely soon!! It's too miserable to do any sightseeing, so I've been happily sitting at my desk making cards.

Dec 31, 2017 - Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone, hope you enjoyed partying and there aren't too many headaches! A lovely sunny day today so we went for a walk through Skipton Castle Woods. The daffodils are already blooming. It was very busy on the walk - lots of people walking their dogs, which made the footpaths very muddy and somewhat slippery in places. But it was very pleasant, and we managed to make it back before the rain started. I don't know how the sheep don't get foot rot - the fields are very sloppy, even on the slopes there is water oozing...

Dec 29, 2017 - It's white again

We arose this morning to find a blanket of the white stuff everywhere. Very pretty, and it snowed most of the morning before turning to rain which then made it slushy We fed the ducks and swans with some bread - the poor swans had a pile of snow on top of their wings!!

Dec 14, 2017 - 53º56.24N 2º0.42W

After all the overnight rain the ice had melted when we arose this morning, so we set off. There were some large patches of ice along the way, some thicker than others, but we managed to get through them all. The swans were happy to be swimming and not walking on water. The fields are all green again, free from snow and ice . We were aiming to reach Skipton today, but alas, three things saw us pulling up just a couple of kms short - 1. It was almost dark (3.45pm) 2. It was pouring with rain 3. We couldn't fit undet the bridge at Snaygill!...
