Nov 1, 2013 - Konye-Urgench

Salam - This is the last of two full weeks among World Heritage sites. What a gift. The remains of Konye-Urgench consist of just a few buildings but each is memorable. The first is the Turabeg Khanym Mausoleum/Throne room. Outside you get to see the construction of the double dome since part of the outer dome has collapsed. Inside is one of the most beautiful interiors I've seen in Central Asia - a giant calendar in dark blue and white tiles. Then a long walk to the Gutlug Timur minaret that soars 64 meters. The minaret dates to the early...

Jun 26, 2012 - Bogged

Today was pretty stressful. Basically we stopped for lunch beside the first river we'd seen for days. Only problem was the truck got bogged. No problems plenty of trucks were passing on the road, one would surely help us. Except that the first truck to help got bogged and bogged out truck even more. We had lunch, expecting to be rescued soon. The heat was starting to get to us all. A lack of shade and drinking water were the real killers. Matt and Ellen worked tirelessly digging to get the truck out, with the sand mats they carry for these...

Jan 31, 2008 - Dashogus / Konye-Urgench

Nov 10, 2006 - The end of the line

The city of Nukus is the capital of the semi-autonomous Uzbek region of Karakalpakstan, but that's not saying much. Karakalpakstan is relatively large, but looking for it on a map or trying to spot it from the air will likely prove a futile endeavor, blending as it does with the featureles desert and steppe that surround it. It lies a good 1,100 kilometers west of Tashkent. Heading northwest, the first city you'll bump into of any significance is the Kazakstan oil port city of Atyrau on the north shore of the Caspian Sea, about 1,000 km...

Jun 14, 2005 - Turkmenistan

Apr 25, 2005 - Awesome Gas Craters at Darvaza

Depart: Darvaza, Turkmenistan Arrive: Konye-Urgench, Turkmenistan Overnight: Homestay A few of the group walked on ahead towards the gas crater after breakfast. However, by 8:30am, our 8am ride had still not turned up. We went over to the main road and hailed over a passing truck, who agreed to take us for $30. We clambered aboard and headed off. The gas crater was a fantastic sight. It was a huge hole with a diameter of about 70m and around 30m deep and the whole thing was on fire as the huge amount of natural gas coming out has been lit....

Apr 25, 2005 - Portal do Inferno
