Aug 9, 2012 - Koh Samui to Phuket

Today was our last day in Koh Samui at our beatiful hotel! To make the most of it we woke up early and went and watched the sunrise on the beach. It was pretty fantastic! We got to se how early the hotel staff was up as there were many of them buzzing around at 5:30am. Some were even combing the beach! It seemed crazy but this place was pretty over the top as far as luxury goes. It really was the highlite of our trip so far. The food was incredible and our little pool villa was so much fun! After the sunset we went back and napped for about...

Aug 9, 2012 - Phuket Day 1 - Phi Phi Islands

So today we went to The Beach! It was an amazing trip! We got picked up at 8am and were out and about until 7pm! The tour started with a 40 minute bus ride to the harbour where we got on the speed boat! The boat was really really small and there wasn't much space for me to get to a spot where I could concentrate on the horizon to keep from getting sick. On the way there we were with the wind so it wasn't too choppy but I tried to sit at the back of the boat and peer at the horizon that way. It was not the greatest spot. All we could smell...

Aug 8, 2012 - Some Interesting Things I Have Noticed About Thailand

As my vacation winds down, I just figured I would give some insight to what I have seen in Thailand in the few days I have been here. Now, keep in mind that this is only from what I have seen from the outside - since I have not really had a chance to interact with too many Thai people for an extended period of time. The King & Queen - Don't mess with these people. They are revered and making any disparaging remarks could result in you ending up in jail for an extended stay. Seriously. The King and Queen's pictures are everywhere - from the...

Jun 27, 2012 - Beach paradise turns tragic

Looking for a beautiful, easily accessible beach for our remaining couple of days in Southeast Asia we somewhat reluctantly headed towards Phuket, a hugely popular tourist destination. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived, the beaches and water were beautiful and what you have in mind when thinking of paradise, and due to monsoon season, the island was not too busy and accommodation rates were low. We found a great place up the hill from the beach with an infinity pool overlooking the water. The place was so quite (at first we...

Apr 5, 2012 - Adam solo - Phuket

Other than the scuba trip, I really didn’t know how I was going to spend the rest of my solo time. I had reached out to a bunch of couchsurfing hosts all over the south of Thailand, but nothing had been finalized. Interestingly, all the hosts on CS were expats living here as either teachers or dive instructors but no local Thai people. So, I had the Thai islands to the east where Amy and I planned to go after we meet up again, I had the tourist mecca of Phuket to the south, and more beaches and islands and a famous rock climbing area even...

Mar 28, 2012 - Phuket

March 28 to April 2 Patong, Thailand We flew from Bali to Phuket, Thailand and decided to stay at Karon beach. Wondering around that night we saw a baby elephant in the outdoor shopping center where little kids were feeding him bananas. So cute. That night we made plans to meet up with our friends Benita and Phil (Dip) the following day at Patong beach. They were part of our Vietnam and Cambodia tour group. Dip came and picked us up with a long boat (aka the love boat). Then they showed us around the area. We went out on the town that night...

Mar 21, 2012 - Phuket, Thailand

Phuket is Thailand’s only island province. Set within a lush tropical landscape, it is dubbed ‘Pearl of the South’ by the tourist industry. The ship is anchored offshore of Patong. Once a sleepy fishing community, Patong is a major resort area with plenty of shopping, restaurants and hotels. We tender ashore as we are on a shore excursion to Phang Nga Bay. From the tender, we cross a series of floating wooden docks to get to the mainland. The waterfront is a sandy beach with offerings of boat rentals, beach umbrellas, jet skis and...

Feb 26, 2012 - Up to absolutely nothing

Sorry it's been awhile since I've updated here but other than sitting in the sun on the beach most days and wandering around the shops and night markets in the evenings, I really haven't had anything too interesting to report. I arrived in Phuket last week and made my way directly to Patong, which is probably the most over developed and popular beach here. After a few days of the madness I scooted down to Kata Beach which is quite a bit more tame and relaxed...aka, more my speed. I'm back in Patong now though because I think it'll be easier...

Feb 26, 2012 - Phuket II

OK, so as far as travel updates go that last one wasn't terribly informative. I hadn't written anything in awhile and just thought you'd like to know that I was alive and kicking. So, now here's the low down on Phuket. If you like to drink and party this is the place for you. I was waiting for my taxi at my hotel this morning at 9:30 a.m. and there was a guy standing in the lobby with a huge beer half finished. I couldn't tell if he was still going from the night before or was getting a head start on the new day. If you want to open a...

Feb 24, 2012 - Di set in set

Feb 12, 2012 - dances with elephants

Endless beautiful beaches, cloudless blue sky and 5 star treatment at Aleenta Resort gave way to a 2 hour drive north to a National Park and the Elephant Hills Resort. Another change of pace for us. Right in the middle of a jungle rain forest but neat clean and accommodation quite luxurious. Tents with all the amenities. Staff amazing We were somewhat disappointed in the 'elephant experience'. Had thought it would be much longer (important to read the small print) but nonetheless did get to prepare food (enormous quantities) and to wash...

Purple and pink live coral, Jack Fish, Cleaner Shrimps and some crabs. Water temperature was 28 degrees Celsius. Jason was being attacked by small fish on his ears and mustache. Beto showed us a cleaner shrimp that he...
