After hours of internet research and rejection, I finally found a guy from Youth International that was willing to help me find volunteer work on the west coast. I headed to Phuket and then took a 3 hour bus ride just north of Khao Lak to a towm called Ban Namkem. Unlike Phuket, Ban Namkem was a fishing village and not a hot spot for tourism. The village was mostly destroyed along the water and most of the boats were destroyed or heavily damaged. Dec 16, 2004 - Khao Lak

Back down south again for some beach relaxation and diving. We arrived in Khao Lak after a mammoth journey from Bangkok including a 14 hour sleeper train and a 5 hour bus journey!! But it was worth the journey. Khao Lak is a small resort town on the Andaman coast (west), about 1 hour north of Phuket. It is a dive Mecca attracting divers heading out to the Similan Islands on Live aboard dive boats.
