Oct 13, 2019 - The Alps of Switzerland

Our last day was magnificent!!! All of the pictures are of Switzerland. If you didn't know what Switzerland looked like, now you do. If you did know what Switzerland looks like, the pictures reconfirmed it!! It's just beautiful!! We started out on our bus driving toward the mountains. Our Program Director/Trip Leader Sjaack (pronounced Jock), talked to us as we drove; giving us interesting information about Switzerland: There are over 100 lakes. There are over 1300 tunnels. The longest tunnel is 35.5 miles; but you don't drive through it....

Jul 3, 2019 - Meiringen to Interlaken and rest day

Stage 20 Meiringen to Interlaken We had some real Swiss ‘dunder und blitzen’ last night soon after we went into our tents at about 9pm. At each lightning flash my tent would light up like a globe and then would shake with each roll of thunder. The rain drummed on the fabric outside and the wind pushed the tent sides around but I was as snug as a bug in a rug. I must have fallen asleep at some stage because when I next woke all was peaceful outside. The day’s ride started with a gentle uphill for a kilometre or two before we turned left onto...

May 29, 2019 - Interlaken and the top of Europe

Hello from Switzerland, They rescheduled our departure time on the Glacier Express so we had to leave our hotel in St. Moritz at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Due to our early departure, the hotel made us breakfast to go. So off all 32 of us went walking to the train station with our breakfast satchels in hand. We boarded the Glacier Express with ample time before departure and everyone started rummaging in their bags for breakfast...because you know, it had been hours since we had last been fed!! It was a long travel day. I know I’m starting to...

Mar 29, 2019 - More time in the mountains! Interlaken and Zermatt March 29-April 1

I will really let the photos speak for this trip. Traveled to Interlaken from Zurich and met up with my friend Julia, her two friends Maddie and Liz, and then our friend Alex who is studying in Geneva, came and met us as well! On Friday we walked around the town, did a chocolate making/ tasting class, walked to a beautiful lake and just enjoyed the city. The next day I went paragliding in the morning with Julia! My pilot’s name is Falco and he let me help set up the parachute, he gave me a backpack with music playing, and then he clipped...

Aug 1, 2016 - Swiss National Day

It had been a noisy night with thunderstorms but Swiss National Day dawned cloudy but dry. We decided we would walk down to Interlaken for the town parade. The parade was colourful but lacked the organisation and efficiency you usually expect of the Swiss. We enjoyed it all the same.

Jul 5, 2016 - Walk into Interlaken

As usual we spent our first day exploring the local area and getting information on what to see and do. We had visited Interlaken on a week’s holiday about 15 years ago with Heather’s mum but only remembered staying at the Grand Victoria Hotel and going up the Jungfrau. From the campground we walked into Unterseen (the old town of Interlaken) and then explored Interlaken which sits between the two lakes of Thunsee (Lake Thun) and Brienzersee (Lake Brienz) The town was very busy with lots of tourists. We found the Grand Hotel overlooking the...

Jul 4, 2016 - Heading into Switzerland

Today we headed north and east into Switzerland. We had to stop at the border to buy our required vehicle documentation for the bus to travel on Swiss roads. That was quickly and easily done. The journey was easily undertaken on the excellent Swiss motorways. Only the last bit as we neared Interlaken was on ordinary roads but even they were well engineered despite the hilly terrain. We arrived at the campground safely. Tony had to back down the internal campground road to get into our pitch (no turning room) which was a little tense but...

Jun 18, 2016 - Lucerne to Interlaken

Day 8 – Lucerne (Luzern) to Interlaken – June 18, 2016 Today was another early day – since we had rescheduled the boat cruise from the prior day – and it was a good thing that we did because it had rain the day prior – and we probably could not have seen much at all. We departed for the boat at 8:15AM, immediately got on (it was only our group of 30 something people) and off we went. The water was quite calm and the wind was not blowing and there even was some blue sky. The Captain was very knowledgeable and gave a commentary about the...

Sep 30, 2015 - Interlaken, Switzerland and Trummelback Falls

Today, we weren't planning to do much but relax. However, I got the great idea to go shopping in Interlaken. Robert and Leah wanted to go hiking at Trummelback Falls, so we all headed to Interlaken together. We found lots of great souvenirs and watched the para sailors jump off the mountain and soar through the sky and land in the park next to where we were shopping. We ate at an Italian restaurant and I had bread soup. I think they used rye bread for the base. I actually liked it a lot! Afterward, we decided to all go check out the...

Aug 11, 2015 - On to Wildersil,Switzerland

Tuesday, August 11th. Austrian to Lichtenstein to Switzerland We woke to a mix of sun and clouds but before we took off for Interlaken (Between Lakes) we had to discover the source of the noise. We traipsed down a grassy forest path and found not a babbling brook but a raging river full of very noisy rapids. With that mystery solved we headed out. Once again we chose to take the squiggly road on the map instead of the 4-lane highway. In spite of the sometimes treacherous road we were well rewarded by our decision. The first pass we went up...

Dec 27, 2014 - A Snow Day

Saturday 27 December 2014 Weather: -2° with snow in Interlaken, rain in Thun Steps: 12,711 Instead of waking to drifts of snow on the ground this morning, we woke to snow gently falling and about 4 inches of snow had settled on everything overnight. More excitement and more photographs ensued. We had discussed our travel plans for today at dinner last night and agreed that with the weather forecast for snow all day, it would be a waste of time heading to Zermatt as views of the Matterhorn would most likely to be limited. The trip to...

Apr 25, 2014 - Day 23 – Friday 25 April – Interlaken

Today we had a beautiful buffet breakfast at Hotel de la Prix. We were the only ones there and the sun was shining in the windows and outside was a view to the snow-capped mountains. The hotel manager brought us a hot chocolate each and served the chocolate powder in a glass cup and had heated and frothed milk in a jug. As uncouth as I am, I just poured the hot milk into the glass cup with ALL the chocolate and then stirred it. Megan started laughing and told me I am supposed to spoon the desired quantity of chocolate into the tea cup and...
