Jun 4, 2006 - Gothenburg

The owners of the major amusement park in Gothenburg also seem to have a monopoly on all the campgrounds in the city & charge rather un-amusing rates. However it was finally a nice sunny day, so we made the most of the afternoon staying in the campground by the water, drinking vodka & christening the frisbee for this trip. Gothenburg is a nice & well kept city, home to a few claims to fame: the world's largest Maritime Museum, Sweden's largest shopping mall & amusement park, and the finishing line of the Volvo Ocean Race. They even have...

Apr 14, 2006 - thus ends the second chapter

So I spent the last evening on a boat/hostel/pub/restaurant and it was a fantastic evening. I was sitting there reading my Lonely Planet and cursing myself for not having read it earlier ("why am I staying here... I'm missing out on a hostel with a sauna!"), but as with all things, my personal philosophy is that most things happen for a reason, we just have to look harder if we want to discover the whys (and if you still can't find anything redeeming about a shitty situation, it probably had to be this way or it would have been something...

Cognosce te Ipsum

Apr 13, 2006 - Always, ALWAYS, accept a drink offered by a viking!

So tonight I'm sleeping in a boat/bar/hostel/restaurant moored on the fringes of central Stockholm. Sweden has been an absolute delight. In Gothenburg I met up with my old friend Anna, which was fantastic in the "it simultaneously feels like yesterdays and a lifetime ago since I saw you last (two and a half years ago in New Zealand). She's working at the uni and doing her pHd, has this fantastic little condo in the city centre... and in the same apartment a friend of hers had just moved out. So Matt ended up with his very own Uber trendy...

Aug 26, 2005 - Tranemo

Start: Gothenburg End: Tranemo Weather: Rainy Ride: 70km It was raining when I awoke and the inside of the tent was damp in some places indicating heavy rainfall overnight, so I was in no hurry to get up and pack a wet tent. When I did get up the rain had stopped although drops of water continued to fall from the canopy of the trees. The outer flysheet and the tarpaulin (used because the flysheet is no longer 100% waterproof) had to be packed away wet whereas the dome itself and the groundsheet were merely damp (and a bit muddy). I had gone...

Aug 25, 2005 - Gothenborg

Start: Sweden End: Gothenburg Weather: Rainy Ride: 45km (Norway 15 +Sweden 30) The scenery on Sweden's side of the border was similar to Norway's, but perhaps less dramatic. Still it was a pleasant ride into Gothenburg station. At the station I took the opportunity of the shelter and searing provided by the platform to rearrange my bags. With that task complete I set out to find information on trains & buses and a map of the city in case I had to ride out of Gothenburg. The first information service I tried only dealt with travel within the...

Jul 12, 2005 - Sweden!

We safely made it from Cambridge (its traffic reputation notwhithstanding, we did not get sucked into a vortex*) to Stansted airport in plenty of time. Even though yesterday we sent home a large box of stuff, our luggage was still 4 kg overweight (~10 lbs). RyanAir being the European answer to SouthWest Airlines (only more so), they charged us for it. Oh, well. It was still the cheapest airfare you've ever heard of! :-) £1.99 each for the two-hour flight! Add in the overweight charges, and it comes to £11.24 each (about US$20). Now, I'll...

Jun 28, 2005 - Gothenberg, Sweden to Norway

Will add photos later as am writing this at library and no USB port to download photos. Library is free and it costs a fortune at the internet cafes. We have been so lucky with the weather. It was wonderful in Carlskrona and when we got to Gothenberg everyone said it had been terrible there, so the good weather must have been following us around. We have had 2 weeks in Gothenberg and had the most marvelous time. I would like to thank all our Swedish friends for taking such good care of us and showing us around. First we went to Borje and...

Jul 26, 2004 - We are in Sweden

Hello to all, Since our last posting we have been busy. We rode into Denmark along the East coast, touching down at Aabenraa, then decided to follow the North Sea Cycle Route along the WEST coast and crossed over to Ribe, a beautiful town and the Oldest City in Northern Europe! We followed the coast tgrough Sondvig, Harboor, Klitmollen and Hanstholm to Skagen at the Northern tip. That was fantastic! The North Sea and the Baltic Sea come together at one point and the result is dramatic! You can actually see the line where they meet. We...

Jun 7, 2004 - Sweden Part 1

Holiday notes June 2004 Well just to make it interesting - we will start this on the 30th May. Left home on Sunday morning at 11.30pm - about on schedule!! The drive down the A1 was relatively uneventful - except for one of the wheels making a clicking noise just as we arrived at the site - and we arrived at the chosen site near Felton- well I say chosen, it was the third on the list and the only one not full! However, to call it a site is a bit over egging it. It's a certified location in Caravan Club speak - and it should be "certified"....
