Jun 14, 2015 - Göteborg

Sunday, June 14 Got up at 6:30 and left the hotel shortly after 7. Too early for breakfast at the hotel, but our train was at 8:22. We walked the 2 km from the hotel to the train station. Along the way, police on motorcycles blocked a couple of intersections, and we saw a short motorcade coming from the directions of the castle. Other than police cars, there were 3 matching (!) cars and one other in the motorcade. Got to the station before 8 and bought muffins and coffee for breakfast on the train. Southern Sweden seems to be forest and...

Scandinavia 2015

Sep 1, 2014 - Gothenburg, Sweden - Proud Home of Volvo

On the west coast, this is Sweden's second largest city and proud home to Volvo. It was founded by King Gustavus Adolphus in 1621 and is situated at the mouth of the Gota River. It is the largest port in Scandinavia and we were anchored at what appeared to be a very large cargo area. Since our time in port was relatively short, we opted for a leisurely tour. There's a lot of Old World charm here and our first stop was at the Masthuggs Church. Perched high on a hill and built in 1914, there's a glorious view of Gothenburg. To get even a...

Aug 18, 2014 - Final day in the Bohuslan coast

The weather had not been very good so our final day was spent having a drive around one of nearby peninsulas. We found the small village of Fiskebackskil with its cobbled streets and old fisherman’s cottages and then Grunsund on the point of the peninsula. There was very few people around. We found a lovely cafe with homemade cakes and made the best of the day before heading back to base.

Aug 16, 2014 - A challenging walk in the Ramsvilkslandet Nature Reserve

We decided to undertake one of the other local walks. This turned out to be a lot more challenging than the previous walks. This was at the Ramsvilslandet nature reserve. To get to the reserve we had to cross a small swing bridge over Sote canal. We started our walk taking one path but it was muddy so we changed our mind and chose a different trail path. This proved to be fine but challenging. It was well marked but at times there were guide ropes to help you down the rocks, crevices that had to be jumped or scrambled over, and stone fields...

Aug 15, 2014 - Bronze Age Rock Carvings

Today we headed to just outside Tanumshede to the Tanum World Heritage Area a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here there are over 600 Bronze Age petroglyps or rock carvings. They were carved into the rocks between 1800 to 500 BC. At the time the area was the sea shore. The Bronze Age people at the time were very sophisticated craftsmen and travelers by water. We started our visit at the museum which provided an excellent description of the Bronze Age period and the background to why they were carved. It also highlighted the ongoing problem of...

Aug 13, 2014 - Exploring north along the coast

We decided to have one of our drive and explore days exploring the coast north of Kungshamn with no real destination in mind. We found some lovely little gems. Our first stop was the small village of Hunnebostrand. Although small it had three harbours and a really beautiful location. We really loved the village. We then went round the Bottnafjord which juts quite a way inland. Again just perfect. We then noticed an historic marker just outside Hamburgsund. We discovered the ruins of a medieval castle high on the hill above the village and...

Aug 12, 2014 - Local walk and a visit to Lysekil

It was a lovely morning g so we decided to do one of the local walks. The walk which was again very well signposted took us through the local nature reserve, winding through forest and granite rock. The heather was in full bloom so gave the rocks an added dimension. After late lunch we headed to Lysekil on the next peninsula south mainly to do a big shop but we explored the town a little before the heavens opened.

Aug 11, 2014 - Exploring Kungshamn and Smögen

Despite the wind and some threatening clouds we spent the day exploring Kungshamn and the Smögen the two local towns. In Kungshamn we visited the local tourist office and got some suggestions for walks etc before exploring the harbour. It was just beautiful with the red rock inlets and loads of boats. To get to Smögen on a separate rocky island we had to cross a bridge with a view point over the islands. Great views. Smögen was a lot more touristy the main part of town was alongside the long quay known as Smögenbryggan. Walking along the...

Aug 10, 2014 - Move to Kungshamn

We left the Varberg area and headed north once again. Our destination this time was Kungshamn on the Bohuslan coast about fifty miles north of Gothenburg. As we headed north the scenery started to change from gentle farmland to wooded and rugged with granite rock outcrops. We felt we were driving back in Canada –welcome home! Kungshamn sits at the end of one of the many peninsulas on this coast. Leaving the motorway we were on ordinary roads but again excellent. There was only one narrow bit over a bridge across an inlet and the scenery was...
