Aug 4, 2016 - Travel day

We left Atlanta for flight to JFK, where we boarded FinnAir flight to Helsinki. There we changed planes before finally arriving in Stockholm at 3:00 pm on Friday. We had a city tour on the way to our hotel, The Clarion, followed by a welcome dinner at the hotel. Our guide is Betty, from Vermont, and there is 29 people in our group.

Aug 3, 2016 - Stockholm, Sweden

We visited Stockholm in 2010 as part of our trip to Russia and Scandinavia and spent a delightful four days there. This visit was just a two day stopover on our way back home. For more information on visiting Stockholm, see our travel blog, Russia and Scandinavia 2010. May 31, 2016 - Who says it's cold in Sweden?

Arrived in Stockholm after a 5 hour sail through the beautiful archipelago. Incredibly beautiful city and we are so lucky to be here. Last time the ship tried to come here the port authority wouldn't let them come in because of the weather, lots of turns coming in and a very narrow channel. We have arrived to a lovely hot summer day. Tonight we will eat in our room and enjoy the same 5 hour journey out. The city is stunning. I had pre purchased tickets to the ABBA museum and we walked fast for 35 minutes then took a harbour ferry full of...

May 27, 2016 - Stockholm under the rain

As planned today I get awake with a 2km walk to the bus. Then I get to Stockholm town center and start visiting on foot. This was the most rainy day of the week so I have been mainly using my camera but you will see few pictures however from which the royal palace. The old town is very nice but it would be better to appreciate this on a sunny day. So I used also the metro and a ferry to get from an isolated Island and find my way back asking a sympathetic guy in the street. Nice but wet day. ..

May 26, 2016 - In the region of Stockholm

These two last days occurs under rain most of the days and nights. By the hazard of my navigation system I get to a tourist office where the woman in charge made me to stay in the archipelago of 7 islands. I was looking for organizing a visit of Stockholm with a first step being to found a place to park 24h at least and to find a way to travel to and inside Stockholm. So I have found a nice place in a forest then I will have to walk 2kms and then I will have 24h transport including busses, boats, metro... But the weather is still turn to...

May 23, 2016 - Depart Stockholm

Monday May 23 For this first morning onboard, we ordered breakfast in our room – this permitted a leisurely start to the day. At 9:00 we made our way off the ship for a bus tour of Stockholm. With the “QuietVox” headset system provided for us, we were able to hear our guide describing the city as we toured the venues. The system works both on the bus and while walking about, as long as one is in range of the guide. Our first stop was Stockholm’s City Hall where we had a few minutes to explore the outside of the building and take in the...

May 22, 2016 - Boarding the Viking Sea

Sunday May 22 The weather is getting warmer by the day and today we woke to sunshine and temperatures already in the mid-teens. We ate breakfast at our hotel Motel L. Fortunately for us, the Martensdal tram station is just across the road from our hotel, We took the tram to Gullmarsplan station where we caught the “Tunnelbana” into Gamla Stan (the Old Town). From “Tunnelbana” station, we walked to a passenger ferry that took us across the harbour to Djurgården, an island which is the site of a number of museums as well as the local...

May 21, 2016 - Saturday in Stockholm

Saturday May 21 After breakfast at the hostel, we went for a nature walk along the river following a boardwalk that extended out into the nearby marsh area. Although we did not see much wildlife, we heard many birds. We checked out and drove into Uppsala, toured the cathedral and walked to the Linnaeus Garden. The Garden commemorates the work of Carl Linnaeus (1708-78), Sweden’s most famous natural scientist and the father of the modern systematic classification of flora and fauna. The Garden was quite busy as there were special period...

Dec 4, 2015 - Seeking Stockholm

Our second Icelandair flight featured an upgrade of sorts. We were offered a traditional Iceland Yule malt, a drink of nonalcoholic malt beverage and orange soda. Underwhelming. We were also offered thumbnail-size Yule cookies. I took two. At Stockholm airport, we found our way easily with no customs, no passport check, and no forms to fill in. My cash card passed its first test. Not so my credit card. Bus ticket machines refused to complete its requests. Jet lagged and now stressed, I was a bit snappy. The patient fellow at the travel help...

Aug 26, 2015 - August 20, 21

August 20- 21 Thursday, Grammar, Thomas, Olivia, Anti Teslin and I went to Lekes (preschool) for half of the morning. It was the first day for Olivia. Lekes usually starts at age 3 and goes on until kids go to grade one at the age of 6. Thomas, with a January birthday, will go to school next year. The teachers sang some songs in Swedish that Grammar sang along with in English. Then she taught them "Sleeping Bunny." After Lekes, Thomas, Grammar and I headed out for the Vasa Museum, roughly retracing the route Grammar and I took with Mia on...

Aug 25, 2015 - August 17, 18, 19

August 17 - 19 Our busy week started with Mia's eventful birthday on Monday. It did not go exactly as planned. The yummy taco dinner and Mia's requested chocolate sticky cake - kladdkaka - (somewhat like a rich brownie) were part of the plan and were much appreciated. The other outings did not happen because Mia woke up (in the tent beside Grammar) complaining that her head was itchy. Anti Teslin checked Mia's head and found lice. After much internet research, two thorough treatments of Mia and lots of fine combing of everyone, the critters...

Aug 24, 2015 - Cruise day 3 - Stockholm

Ok so think I have fixed issues with anxiety - as I was fine last night. Today we dock in Stockholm - Dave has been awake for a couple of hours watching us come in through the islands on the spycam. We dock at 9.00am so we are up, had breaky and ready to disembark by 9.30 (decided to let the crowds disperse first). The ship offered a deal on the "hop on hop off" bus - so we took that up as the docks are a fair way from the city. Stockholm is made up of several islands which I did not know - and it is so clean, crisp and pristine. We spent...
