Sep 2, 2014 - Exploring Lake Vȁttern and Vadstena

We spent the day doing one of our ‘drive and let’s see what we find” days along Lake Vȁttern. It was beautiful sunny day. We discovered small pretty villages on the lake shore and a nature park with a road through an ancient forest and along the cliffs with lovely views of the lake. We then found the small town of Vadstena with its beautiful lakeside setting which had once been a royal seat and important monastic centre. Dominating the town is the Vadstena Slott with its four round towers and a large moat. It was originally built as a...

Aug 6, 2012 - back to Linkoping

Monday 6/8/12 back to Linkoping The sun still shines. We have a leisurely breakfast, while sitting on the steps watching the builders fix the barn roof. Maria had a “chat” with the boss builder and he will look out for the straps for the kayak trolleys, he asked Maria “do they look like this??.” He showed her a strap that was identical to a missing strap holding up some cables. Peter helped Olof make some repairs to the jetty while us girls tidied in the house then took a walk in the woods to the rocks. Rain was forecast for the afternoon...

Aug 5, 2012 - Summer cottage

Sunday 5/8/12 Another sunny, calm morning! Barely a ripple on the water. Everyone slept well on the soft moss and leaves. Muesli and sour milk ( like unsweetened natural yoghurt) and coffee for breakfast. Nickie felt brave enough to try out the kayak and yes, she loved it. How much easier to paddle in a “proper” kayak, with a rudder over gentle waves. Arms paddling in a smooth rhythm, quite meditative, similar feeling of a relaxing bike ride. Hanna paddled alongside me, the others sped ahead in the boat to the island where yellow mushrooms...

Aug 4, 2012 - Pig Island

Saturday 4/8/12 Pig Island The morning sun woke Nickie at about 5am, a clear and still sky. Lovely. We packed up food and tents and other gear to get to the islands by kayak and boat. There was some mystery about missing straps from the kayak trolleys, maybe the builders working on the roof of the barn have “borrowed” them. Anyway, we used other rope to fasten the kayaks on the trolleys and we had a little trek down through the paddock past the bull and his harem to get to the jetty. Peter and Maria kayaked and nickie and hanna rode with...

Aug 3, 2012 - Linkoping, Sweden

Friday 3/8/12 Linkoping, Sweden It’s great to have “a lie in” and not to have to pack up tent and bikes. We cycled with Hanna to see “Olde Linkoping”, which could be described as a model on our west coast “Shanty town”. Between the rain showers . In the old workshops we viewed the crafts or trades, rope making, wordworking, sweets and confectionary, jewellery and needlecraft. We had fun at the 9 pin bowling lane and tried our calligraphy skills in the old schoolhouse. The sun came out and it was very warm and steamy when we sat out for...

Aug 2, 2012 - Rimforsa to Hanna’s home in Linkoping

Thursday 2/8/12 to Hanna’s home in Linkoping. 42 ks A sunny day!! We txt hanna and said we hoped to see her about lunchtime!! The roads around the lakes were very scenic and in one small town we stopped to watch some young kids take their swimming lessons. Pete final spots a cherry tree on the roadside and he enjoys takes a 10 minute feast. About 15 mins along the road, we see a large, grand Chateau on the hill. “Wonder what that place is ?”says Pete, “it’s a coffeeshop” says Nickie as she passes the roadsign of a coffeecup symbol and...

Aug 1, 2012 - Mariannelund to Rimforsa

Wednesday 1/8/12 to Rimforsa 73ks ride time 4hr,15 min Aahh, feeling strong today after good sleep and surprisingly the tent was almost dry, very little dew, so we leave about 8.30am . With sun shining and wind again at our backs we flew along quiet roads among the forest. At about 15ks garmin leads us onto unpaved roads and we pass close to Norra Kvills National park. We see raised viewing structures that must be used during logging. Its the type of woods you would expect to see bear and moose , although the forest seems silent. We have...

Sep 10, 2007 - chillin with dave in quiet Linkoping

we headed down a bit south to see a mate Tim went to uni with Dave. Dave is a pretty smart dude doing a phd on surface coatings of ziconia or something that make blades harder and tougher so u can cut more stuff (sorry dave, this kangaroo hasn't been to uni). Like I said, Tim is a geek and him and Dave talked about this, I kinda zoned out but dave had some sweet shiny vacuum chamber equipment that glowed purple when he made his plasma when he was tryiing to coat stuff. You know, plasma is that stuff that in the movies they always use when...

Jul 2, 2006 - You Might Be Swedish If...

Ahh, Sweden. This has truly been my first "vacation" since I've been in England. Normally traveling isn't relaxing at all. From trying to catch flights, speak the language and navigate hostels to walking all over cities until exhaustion, it can be rough. (I know, you think I'm a spoiled, whiny brat right now!) But, the last few days have been great! Erica (one of my best friends from college) and her husband Par (a professional golfer and former OSU player) picked me up at the airport on Wednesday evening (June 25th). Since then, we have...
