Aug 8, 2014 - Akulla Beech Forests

On our visit to the tourist office the young man recommended an area called Akulla Beach Forests a nature reserve ideal for walking. The area covers over 5,200 hectares and has around 20 lakes. After studying the extensive walking trail book we decided to do the Skogsbo trail, a trail that took us across five hillocks. It had rained briefly overnight so some parts of the trail were a little slippery but very well marked. It was also a good cardiac workout has some of the hillock slopes were quite steep. They were no problem for Daisy with...

Aug 7, 2014 - Falkenberg

Today we headed in the opposite direction but only a short distance to the town of Falkenberg. The town has a long-standing reputation for fly fishing particular during the 19th century when wealthy English gentlemen visited the area. The town had a lovely old area with a beautiful church and old cottages dating back to 18th century. They also had a number of sculptures scattered around the town. A pleasant town to wander.

Aug 6, 2014 - Varberg

Today we visited the nearby town of Varberg on a beautiful sunny day. We first explored the town which had been a popular 19th century bathing resort and then made our way to the sea front which is dominated by a 13th century moated fortress. The fortress is set on a rocky promontory and due to the continuing wars between Denmark and Sweden the town of Verberg and the castle changed hand no less than eight times during the period 1305-1365. From 1265 for over 300 years Denmark ruled Varberg and during that time the fortifications around...

Aug 5, 2014 - Move to Varberg

You would never have believed that we had had so much rain the day before the water had just drained away. We closed up the coach, dumped our tanks and then got on the road to our next campground near Varberg. We had a good journey. Tony likes the Swedish roundabouts- they are nice and big constructed for triple trailers to go around. The roads are also excellent. We arrived at the campground safely who had reserved us a double pitch in the quiet part of the campground although the roads in the campground were a little narrow to get to the...

May 21, 2014 - Sweden

Another bright sunny day for our trip across into Sweden via the Oresundsbron bridge. This was the bridge featured in both the BBC series "The Bridge". It is the longest bridge & tunnel crossing as there is a two & a half mile tunnel before you get to the bridge crossing itself which is another five miles long. All very impressive with a very impressive toll to go with it, about £80. That's two new countries we have been to in two days. We are really lucky with the beautiful sunny weather we have had so far. My intention is to get up to...

Sep 12, 2011 - Unexpected delay leaving Sweden

The route south of Gothenburg was all on easy-to-follow cycle paths and it was a perfectly fine day, so it was one of the nicest rides for several weeks, a lot of it right by the sea. I reached Varberg in the afternoon and called in at the port to buy a ticket for the sailing to Denmark the following morning. Unfortunately there was no sailing on Saturday at all, and only an evening one on Sunday arriving at 1am, which I didn't fancy. So I was going to be staying in Varberg for two extra nights. That night I was booked in at a youth hostel...

Jul 28, 2005 - Copenhagen, Denmark ...

C O P E N H A G E N, Denmark ! ... wow cannot believe that we have almost finished our European Summer ! What a whirlwind of a tour ! Laura, we (you) did plan this perfectly, the days on the Eurail was just right ! Ok, arrival into Denmark was pretty eventful ! We took yet another chance and did not pre-book accommodations ( I can never spell that word ) and thus far we have been ok to find something clean and "reasonable"; not in Copenhagen ! We searched ( with backpacks ON I might add! )for about 2 1/2 hours and found nothing. Rooms were...

Aug 30, 2004 - Northern Europe Adventures!

From the Olympics I traveled on to Sweden after Spending a day in Brussels, Belgium. My good friend Maria Brottel was waiting for me. It was great seeing her in her home country. She had come to visit me and other friends in the US just a few months before. (More to come about my great time in Sweden later) From Sweden I travelled to Denmark where I stayed with 2 amazing people, Anders and Lotte. Anders was a former student of my mentor, Tom Cummings. They had a beautiful home in Copenhagen. Anders two daughters were adorable! I wish I had...
