Oct 2, 2019 - The Last Group Visits Barcelona

Barcelona! Wow, what a city! First single word to describe it is “TRAFFIC”! Cars, buses (public and multiple tour type), Vespas, electric scooters, full size motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrian, lots of dogs (and as a side note, in Spain neutering seems not to be a common practice and yet they all seem to get along ). And they are driving everywhere together! And lots and lots of tourists. Because we only have two full days here we were hitting the big time tourist sites so that was to be expected. The Sagrada Família was as astounding as...

Sep 28, 2019 - Day 29 travelling to Figueres

PHOTOS TO BE ADDED Left Vilanova for Figueres. This involved catching 2 trains with the bikes. First train to Barcelona was fantastic. Space for bikes and not crowded at all. The change of platforms in Barcelona was also very simple. Then after waiting 45min for the train it was suddenly cancelled. And the next train was 1h45min later. So we had lunch in the station. Arrived at Figueres and checked into our apartment. (A large private room with en-suite in a house ). Then quickly headed off to see the Dalí museum. Due to the train being...

Sep 27, 2019 - Day 28. A day in Barcelona

Caught the train to Barcelona. Didn’t take the bikes which was a good move... the city was so crowded it would have been painful. Walked to the water front then had lunch in the old city are. We found the main tourist streets were very crowded with tourists from all over. So we tried to stick to the small backstreets. Lunch was in a nice looking restaurant but it was very ordinary touristy food. Did a walking tour of the history of Barcelona and Gaudí architecture. Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable young tour guide. Saw various Gaudí...

Sep 26, 2019 - Day 27 A day in Vilanova I la Geltrú

Due to lack of hot water I climbed to the top level of the house and had a shower in the host’s shower, on an outside balcony. We spent the day exploring Vilanova on our bikes. Through the market ( where we bought some ham to sample the most expensive one (115€ per kg) as well as one 2 levels down). Rode the full length of the seafront from the port to swimming beaches.

Sep 26, 2019 - Barbara in Barcelona (this is why I can't travel alone...)

Today I spent the day seeing the sights in Barcelona. I had tickets for 10 am to enter La Sagrada Familia; Gaudi's ongoing masterpiece of a church. Droves of people there, but the timed entry thing kept it down to a dull roar, plus they have docents every 20 feet or so to remind people not to sit on the floor, climb on the furniture, hang from the lamps, etc., in their attempt to get another selfie portrait (what is wrong with people?!?!?). I also took too many photos, none of which do justice to the fabulous interior and exterior of the...

Sep 25, 2019 - Barbara in Barcelona

So today was another travel day; from a bus to another bus, to the airport to Barcelona, then on to the metro (which is fabulous here: why don't we have one?!?!?!) to my home for the next few days, near Las Ramblas in the old city of Barcelona. I must say that my impression is very much improved from my initial experience with Barcelona; after close to 48 hours awake on the plane over here; due to a prolonged 12 hour stop in Chicago...) I took a tourist bus around the city, which not only helped me to get my bearings, but also allowed me to...

Sep 25, 2019 - Day 26. Travelling to Vilanova i la Geltrú

- left the apartment by 7am to catch an early train. - Bikes loaded on train and all was fine. Fairly boring countryside (dry flat) and we were happy we hadn’t bothered to ride any of it. - We got to Zaragoza to change trains at the station our ticket had as our destination, only to get off the train and discover our next train went from another station (as per the 2nd ticket given to us at the Pamplona train station). Damn, I hadn’t checked the detail and if we’d stayed on the train we would have arrived at the correct change station....

Sep 3, 2019 - Barbara G: Made it to Barcelona and on to Calpe tomorrow!!!

After a 6 am flight from Seattle to Chicago (thanks greatly to Edson; want a sweet gesture!) Unfortunately I had about 10 hours to spend in O'Hare (which I do not recommend) and then at 10 pm flight to Barcelona, I arrived in a rather frazzled fashion around 1:30 pm. I decided that the best thing would be to tour around a bit, before succumbing to the joys of sleep and a shower, but I am not sure how wise this really was. I walked down the historical Ramblas area, seeing lots of wonderful architectural details, but after a time felt that I...

Jul 11, 2019 - Barcelona

Ola, Since the last entry we've stayed in Barcelona for a few days, then travelled through Bordeaux and onto my village of Saint Savin. We are now settled here in France for the next week and a bit before Lorri goes home to Australia to her family who are missing her. We've been to Barcelona before and loved it. Last time we felt more like tourists because we visited all of the Gaudi buildings that made the architect and the city famous. This time we came back to get a different feeling of the city on a road less travelled. This time we...

Jude's 2019

Jun 20, 2019 - Barcelona & Valencia

We spent a few days in Santiago to relax after the Camino then we moved on to Barcelona. Our boutique hotel was located in the Gotic area of the city. We were greeted with a glass of Cava upon our arrival at 10 am in the morning. The hotel was in a great location and had numerous features such as a workout facility, roof-top lounge, pool and a great restaurant for breakfast each morning. The surrounding Gotic area is home to numerous local artists who have small shops and sell authentic merchandise. It has a similar feel to the SOHO area in...

May 15, 2019 - Lleida

15 May – Wednesday It is great that check out over here tends to be a bit later, none of this out by 10, it is often 11am or noon, so we are not under too much pressure to leave. Today is noon, so we can relax a bit, until we head for the bus. Breakfast was a lot more relaxed too, we were not rushed like yesterday. The bus is not in when we arrive at the station, but we are early. There is no platform indicator on the board, so Tony heads off to the buses parked up, the drivers tell him to ask at the office (the one that was empty when Tony...

2019 tour

May 10, 2019 - Barcelona (don't mention Liverpool, Barca lost!)

10 May – Friday Another big breakfast to keep us going for the day. Today we head to the gothic quarter for a “free” guided tour, we need to take the metro to get there, and the hostel crew tell us to get a T-10 ticket. Good for ten trips, only €11 ($18), and even better, we can share the ticket, just pass it back after the first one goes through. It works out that each trip is less than half the price of a single trip ticket, so worthwhile getting. Watching a few people, it seems that they are not too concerned who has a ticket or not, and...
