Jan 20, 2016 - Lake Naverone

This was in the end a relaxing day rowing, playing tennis, swimming and walking. We could have done some mountain biking as they can be hired here by the hour at Lake Naverone but decided that there wasn't really anywhere around here that we could satisfactorily take bikes off-road for a couple of hours. The boat, tennis racquets and balls were supplied free by the management here. It really is just a great place for relaxing and chilling out in marvellous scenery. We tried to walk up the hillside nearby but there are no tracks that you can...

Jan 19, 2016 - Lake Naverone Cottages

The day dawned at about 5.15am as it was getting light and I managed to get a beautiful silhouette of the The Castle (2,359m/7,313ft). The view from Coot Cottage where we are staying is stunning particularly in the early morning light. A little later when the sun was up with clear blue skies we could really appreciate the beauty of this place. We walked over to meet the owners who have two Jack Russell's and, yes, you've guessed it, a Staffie. He is a 2 year old brown boy called Zulu with a lovely character and friendly towards the guests....

Jan 18, 2016 - On to the Southern Drakensberg Mountains

From our room you can see the same view across the garden to the sea. For security reasons our door had a metal grid gate as well so we slept with the door open but the grid gate locked so we could hear the sea all night. We awoke early as it gets light just after 5am here. Gel went for a walk along the beach with Bella the Staffie. A little later Samantha went for a run along the beach and finished with a swim. I went in yesterday and the sea is surprisingly cold here. Not much warmer than the Atlantic in Camps Bay, Cape Town. Apparently...

Apr 15, 2015 - Maclear to Underberg

Monday 13th April 2015 Maclear to Underberg After a most delicious breakfast at the B&B this morning, we set off from Maclear at around 9am for the 300km drive to Underberg in the shadow of the Southern Drakensberg Mountains. We passed through a number of roadworks on the way which slowed us down on the first part of the trip. Once we were about half way we found a spot by the side of the road to eat our lunch and have a bit of a break for half an hour. The day was sunny and warm and the countryside was very beautiful, with steep hills and...

Aug 22, 2010 - Drakensberge

Echt sehr...

Dec 5, 2008 - Drakensberg Mountains

“Should you become aware of a security risk in the late afternoon, have an early supper and arrange your equipment to easily set up camp... after dark, move without light to a new location … arrange a night watch. …sleep with your clothes and boots on…if raided by bandits use a whistle to warn others…do not resist…note the exact location of the campsite…in order to provide this to a rescue team...". After these tips by ‘Oscar the Otter’ on safety in the mountains I’m not so certain anymore that going walking by myself is such a good...

Dec 28, 2007 - Khotso Farm, near Underberg

Underberg - Khotso Lodge After several conversations from Coffee Bay with the very helpful Andre - the Khotso lodge manager, I decided to take a chance that my trip into Lesotho would be possible and headed to the ranch near Underberg - the launching area for all trips into Lesotho from the East. I'd had 2 false starts trying to arrange my visit into Lesotho. The first plan required a minimum of 2 people so when a Swiss guy on the Bazbus appeared interested, I made several calls to different operators to try to arrange something on the...
