Sep 12, 2011 - Citrusdal, South Africa - Sept. 12

We boarded the safari truck, left Cape Town at 9:30 am today and drove to Citrusdal. It is a smaller rural village set amongst lush green citrus orchards at the foot of the Cederberg Mountains. It is renowned for growing citrus fruits and has thousands of citrus groves. It is also known for its hot mineral baths, but due to road construction (grrr... they wanted us to feel right at home here in South Africa) we consequently did not arrive early enough in the afternoon to go there. We have just one night here at the Citrusdal Country Lodge...

Dec 12, 2008 - One Last Stop

Citrusdale We crossed the South African border and made our way south. There was a little problem at the border when Elton unwittingly admitted that he was working as a guide despite his lack of an employment permit. I thought that we could have helped by assuring the border guards that, in reality, Elton hadn’t really guided that much for us anyways, but he was able to talk his way out of things without our help. It was a long, hot drive south so we stopped in Citrusdale for the night to break up the journey. With a name like Citrusdale...

Jun 18, 2008 - Africa is HUGE!

Admittedly, Christy (our Dragoman truck)isn't the speediest vehicle in the world but we drove for about 8 hours from the Cape of Good Hope to Citrusdal and saw one large town, and a handful of settlements. The 18th we drove from Citrusdal to the Orange River in Namibia - another stamp in my passport! It was a very long day - about 12 hours - and again, we saw only a handful of settlements. On the logistics of the trip - we're all assigned standard chores - mine is take down of the chairs, tables, and general clean up before leaving the...

Well i nearly overslept this morning as there were people talking loudly on the balcony outside my window for a couple of hours in the night and then when I did fall back to sleep eventually I was so sound asleep I didn't hear my alarm! Fortunately I only woke 15 mins late and all was ok! When i went to check-out and ask for a taxi I discovered that there was someone else going to Nomad's office. Tom turned out that Tom was to be on my...

Bridget's Trip!

Dec 17, 2007 - Cape Town to Citrus Creek

Not much to report for our first day on tour. We met at the Nomad office in Cape Town. Once we packed our bags on the truck we headed out on the overland tour. Our group was nice and small; only 13 of us. First stop took us to Long Beach in Bleauberg another area north of Cape Town on the west coast. It gave us wonderful views looking back at Table Mountain and the waterfront area. From here we headed to the Cederberg Mountain region. The road was paved so all of us on board were very surprised at how rough the ride in the truck felt. Some...
