Lion City Day 183 Historical and Cultural Leaving the apartment at 11am we walk the couple of streets to our next hotel where we are able to check in straight away. The triple room is tiny but spotless and has everything we need for the next two nights. We have packed everything we’ll need into a small ruck sack so that we don’t have to open our luggage and can just stack it against the wall. Setting off we head towards the Colonial district and the business area downtown. We join the Jubilee Walk at Fort Canning. This walk was created in...

Garden City Day 181 Hop-on, Hop-off We are all so excited to be in Singapore and raring to get out and explore. Yet again the time zone has changed and we are 5 hours behind New Zealand so our sleep (lack of it) is affected. Up early we decide that the best course of action is to walk to the starting point of the tour buses. Taking one of this might help us get our bearings. Our apartment is not far from Little India on the edge of Bugis and it doesn’t look too far to walk to bus on the map. Walking down Middle Road we are amazed by the...

Jan 15, 2020 - More Singapore

Tuesday January 14 After the tour yesterday, I am off on my own today. Heading out on the MRT, I found it much busier than yesterday. I made the quick trip to Chinatown, and exited the station right on Pagoda street. This is busier than the section we saw yesterday, and even more festive with lots of shops and booths and lots of red and gold decorations for New Year. I finally let my shopping instincts go and got a few things (like I need another bag, but it matches the stewardess uniforms). It wasn’t much, but as the day wore on my...

Jan 13, 2020 - Singapore

Monday January 13 Enjoyed a good night’s sleep thanks to Tylenol PM, and had a good breakfast at the buffet. Very international selection including Asian porridge, French toast, fried noodles, cereal, sausages, fruit, breads, salad, and other items, topped off by good tea. I made a reservation for a half-day tour of the city this afternoon. This morning I will make a survey of the neighborhood area and do some exploration. I have the jet lag feature of being rested but tired as my body tries to figure out what time it is. I’m not trying to...

Jan 12, 2020 - Seattle to Singapore

Sunday January 12 The 16 hour 40 minute flight from Seattle to Singapore went quite well. The plane was newer, so the seats were still padded, and spaced comfortably. The economy seating didn’t start until about row 40, and the front half of the plane had enviable first class compartments and some business seating, but I made my way to my station. The entertainment system was packed with movies, full seasons of TV shows, music, etc. in several languages. We were well fed and watered by amiable hostesses in beautiful traditional-style...

Dec 29, 2019 - Travel

Said Goodbye to Kate and Paul who kindly chauffeured us to the airport. We were lucky to be upgrade to Premium Economy class on the A380, so not only had big seats but an added bonus of bulk head seats. Luxury. Started with a champagne, as it was rude not to, then later had a Singapore Sling, as we were flying with Singapore Airlines. Lovely comfortable journey to Singapore, watching a couple of films on the way.

Sep 21, 2019 - Day 39. Saturday. 21/9/2019. Singapore to Brisbane

Day 39. Saturday. 21/9/2019. Singapore to Brisbane We left the hotel at 11.30am and came to the airport by ‘Grab’, the local version of Uber. It’s cheaper than a shuttle bus shared with possibly 30 other people plus luggage, and we’d recommend it to anyone coming to Singapore. Our hotel organised it. Fortunately Qantas have an Early Check-in, so we were able to check in and leave our ports at just after noon, which then left us free to wander Jewel, the new addition to Singapore airport. It’s not a terminal, just a huge, amazing building...

Sep 20, 2019 - Day 38. Friday. 20/9/2019. Singapore

Day 38. Friday. 20/9/2019. Singapore Today we used the MRT for the first time - decided we just couldn’t walk to the Gardens by the Bay - way too far! Once we found the station and Ian had some advice from a Customer Service lady, it was easy. And sure saved the legs. We decided to do the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest, both which we’ve done years ago, but we weren’t disappointed. The orchids are stupendous, so many, so varied and so beautiful. We were there for about 4 hours and cheated and got the Shuttle cart back to the entry. We had...

Sep 19, 2019 - Day 37. Thursday. 19/9/2019. Singapore

Day 37. Thursday. 19/9/2019. Singapore Ian’s claiming jet lag - I’m saying catch-up. It was 9.30am when I decided I didn’t want to miss out on breakfast - I’d been awake since 7.30, and Ian was still asleep! He heard me getting ready to leave the room, quickly dressed and followed me down, so we just scraped in breakfast before 10am. We walked to Raffles City thinking we’d keep out of the haze and stay indoors. We certainly did that! Wandered around, down some escalators, looked around a bit more, down more escalators and walked some more,...

Sep 18, 2019 - Day 36. Wednesday. 18/9/2019. Singapore.

Day 36. Wednesday. 18/9/2018. Singapore This morning the smog was thick - so thick that there were signs saying to stay indoors as much as possible, and automatic opening doors would have to be opened manually to keep the smog out of buildings. We couldn’t even see the tops of some of the buildings! Hopefully it won’t hurt us for a few days, but fancy living here! We walked to China Town this morning and poked around for a while, had some lunch then walked back - all in stifling heat. We decided to have a rest before venturing out in the...

Sep 17, 2019 - Day 35. Tuesday. 17/9/2019 Zurich to Singapore

Day 35. Tuesday. 17/9/2019. Zurich to Singapore A good flight with a few bumpy spots, but I had a great sleep, and it was lovely when I woke up knowing that I didn’t have to be up at a certain time for breakfast.....I only had to please myself. Ian said he had a couple of 3 hour naps, so he did well also. We arrived in Singapore on time to steamy heat, but we didn’t expect anything different. We would have had to wait an hour for the Shuttle Bus to our hotel, at a cost of $9.50pp. After queuing for a long time to get through Immigration, I...

Aug 28, 2019 - Changi

Had a good nights sleep - Transit hotel in Terminal 3. We walked from T2 - could have caught the train but thought that after a 7 hr flight we should move a bit. Checked in for a 9 hr stay. The rooms are nice and dark - the windows are non existent, so we slept well and checked out at 9. We breakfasted next door at the Transit lounge. A basic selection but adequate. The Portuguese style custard tarts were quite good so J&C had a couple, just to get into practice for Portugal! Viewed the butterfly house and found some wifi to get our...
