Mar 21, 2005 - To Russia With Love

The sun glints off the last thin crusts of snow and ice across the Baltic coast as we come into land at St Petersburg's airport. From the air I have a perfect bird's eye view of the entire city built by Peter the Great just over 300 years ago on the boggy banks of the Neva River. A million questions flood my mind about how it has changed in the three years since I was last here and I'm ready to fire them all at Yegor, director of the adventure tour agency Wild Russia, the company that arranged my visa and accommodation, who is at the...

With recent events in Russia causing their people to go through similar emotions as 9/11 we expect that our entry into their midst will be somewhat difficult and require a maximum of respect and empathy for their feelings. I...

Jun 25, 2004 - St Petersburg, Russia

I won't keep you in suspense about our overall impression of St. Petersburg - basically, it was a let down for both of us. I had heard great things about the city from lots of people and seen beautiful pictures of the city. Charlie had fond memories of the year he spent here in college in 1987 88. Unfortunately, it seems that the city has not made many improvements in recent years and maybe has even gone down hill since the 1980s. The beautiful old buildings I had seen pictures of are still there, but they don't seem to be building anything...
