Over the past week, I've spent time in cities and villages scattered along the Belarus and Ukraine borders. The region has a tragic history, with bloody destruction meted out by the Tatars before the 16th century, Napoleon's troops in 1812 and the Nazis in World War II. Yet in spite of the great calamities here, these lands have nourished the talents of some of Russia's greatest artists.
