Apr 22, 2017 - Córdoba

Saturday 22nd April 2017 Evora to Córdoba Started with rain and ended in sunshine. How lucky are we? So many grape vines and olive trees. Then the change to so much wheat. Even a few solar farms. One was massive. Cattle and sheep. Then what looked like native vegetation - it was so steep it could not be terraced. Probably a nuisance weed but the contrast between the deep red of the poppies and the green of the maturing wheat is a lovely sight. 3 hours on the road but the destination !!!!! Chris got to wander around the amazing...

Apr 21, 2017 - Merida

Friday 21st April 2017, Viseu to Merida Chatted (well listened mainly) to Elliott and Dan over breakfast. A continuation of the 2 hours we heard from mainly Elliott last night after dinner. He was easy to listen to. I know you are not surprised when I tell you I set the gps to the wrong place and we actually ended up in the wrong place. Never mind we finally got to the amazing Roman ruins of Merida. I continue to be amazed at what the Romans got up to with building and how much is still around. Lots is still here which was a centre for them...

Apr 17, 2017 - Viseu environs

Monday 17th April 2017, drive around Viseu environs Happy Birthday Christine - shame about the day. Not a golden day. Drove for 8 hours looking at places around here and kind of missed the point of travel. Argued with the Garmin, went up and down the steepest and narrowest streets we have ever been on, raised Christine's blood pressure to heights never seen before, didn't see what we hoped to see, wasted petrol ....... The countryside is full of colour with yellow, red, purple blossom and a range of greens in the trees. The scenery is great...

Apr 16, 2017 - Folgosa to Viseu

Sunday 16th April 2017, Flogosa to Viseu This was an easy drive today. To Lamaego first and climbed a massive staircase to.......get to the top. What tourists do! The usual morning coffee and then on to Viseu. Great different scenery of the way using back roads until we hit the freeway and then zoom to our next town. Decided to trust the Garmin and worked out we went up a street the wrong way but so were other drivers so who cares? This time a 4 star hotel and we can see the difference. Can't imagine how we got the level of accommodation...

Sep 4, 2014 - Lamego & Peyton's Death-Defying Bus Trip

We visited the town of Lamego where this very Sanctuary was. From the top of the town we walked down the 686 steps (yes, that sounds daunting, but actually it was terraced with beautiful gardens & blue tile fresco along the way). At the bottom of the staircase we walked to a restaurant where we enjoyed a sample of the local traditional specialties, such as the Bolas de Lamego (bread filled with smoked ham) & the Espumante (Portughese sparkling wine). That afternoon after returning to the ship, Duane & Peyton took off on a bus ride up the...

Dec 8, 2013 - A drive up into the mountains of the Serra da Freita.

Another lovely day but with a nip in the air. We decided it was time to explore the nearby mountains although finding the right road was a bit of a nightmare for a start. Once we left the coastal plain our winding road climbed through forested hills of pine and eucalyptus passing small villages perched on hills with terraces along the hillside. We came to the small town of Arouca which had a vast medieval convent and a pretty church on the town’s main square. We continued through the hills enjoying the views but with the lowness of the sun...

Nov 4, 2011 - Rio Douro and Pinhao

The drive from Aveiro to Pinhao was a magnificent long winding journey along the Rio Douro. It´s truly spectacular and the photos simply don´t do it any justice. Unfortunately the day was overcast and rainy however this did not dampen our experience of the beautiful region. It is pure wine country with vines planted on every hillside. All the hills have been painstakingly terraced which produce the most amazing visual effect. We arrived at the Vintage House Hotel in Pinhao, a 5 star establishment. The Hotel was amazing, the decor was a step...

Apr 26, 2010 - Geres

After 5 days in Porto, it was time to get back to a bit of nature, so we headed to the spa town of Geres, within Peneda Geres National Park. Now we thought Luso had an abundance of water, but 5 minutes in Geres told you that Luso, relative to Geres, had small amounts of free flowing water. Needless to say, it was flowing everywhere in Geres and not always in places that townsfolk wanted it to flow. Following hiking route #6, we encounter no one during a steep climb, then as we crest the ridge, we hear hollering, whistling and a lot of bells...
