Oct 10, 2019 - The monks are nuts

We had a great start to the day with a breakfast in a very medieval room complete with suits of armour, swords and shields and other similar regalia. A very nice breakfast where everyone was very quiet and refined ( J and C didn’t really fit in!). One of the staff came around as soon as we sat down with a tray of Pastela da nata. J and C felt obliged to have one. The grandchildren would have loved it - big jars of all sorts of lollies - snakes, fruit lollies, pink lollies, etc. We headed out about 9:30 and did a slow wander all around the...

Oct 9, 2019 - Snakes alive

Today we rose early and left for Obidos, our final stop before heading home. We didn’t like Tom’s planned rout direct to Tomar, so we used a way point - small town called Raposa. We stopped at the local servo and had coffee and a tart in Lopes Restaurant (cafe) attached. Dirt cheap. Interesting watching the locals coming and going. Grandma trying to stop grand-daughter from scoffing bags of chips from the display shelf! We kept on and eventually reached Tomar and came to a stop in a huge public car park - cobbles and dirt, so no marked...

Jun 25, 2018 - Day 36 - Resort 7

A 0900 hrs rise was our latest to date which was not a problem as we had planned on a quiet day; the plan to visit Fatima now a lost thought. Kaye had been experiencing pain from a potential tooth abscess so this morning was spent tracking down an antibiotic in case we required them during our trip home. Our local chemist while very helpful could not sell without a prescription ( we were only hoping ) and the local dentist was not practising until tomorrow afternoon. We then drove the 20 km into Peniche where a very helpful English speaking...

Jun 23, 2018 - Day 34 - Resort 5

Today was a rest day and involved a latish, relaxed breakfast in the quadrangle followed by a walk through the housing estate and golf course to the coast and along the beach to the hotel pool. I enjoyed a swim and discussion with an ex Brit Army Officer on the pools edge. We also called Kellie and spoke with Jack and Emmy who were running naked around the house with all the joy of the good life that they have. Between doing nothing and even more of it, we watched the Steve Jobs movie; slightly disappointed they cut his life story short of...

Jun 22, 2018 - Day 33 - Resort 4

The visit to Sintra and the 104 km drive from our hotel got under way at 0930 hrs. The motorway was a big aid to a relatively quick trip however when approaching Sintra, traffic and road conditions negated any time advantage. The town itself was immediately impressive, an opinion formed from the old but substantial buildings that showed there was wealth when the town was first developed. It sits amongst steep rocky hills with tall heavy vegetation. We needed a few navigation mistakes and a near head on collision on a one way intersection...

Jun 21, 2018 - Day 32 - Resort 3

Breakfast in the hotel at 0915 hrs had us back in our room for a phone call from Scarlett. It was good to speak to the family as they leave next Wednesday for Italy and we will pass them in the air as we head home. We have been debating the best days to visit Lisbon and presently working on the weekend when the traffic should be lighter for the Hop on/ off tour. Today, we have decided to visit the walled village of Obidos which is 20 km north of us. The drive avoided the main highway and was along a narrow winding road that lead us direct...

Jun 20, 2018 - Day 31 - Resort 2

Breakfast in the quadrangle overlooking the pool was enjoyed with the shade of the building and a cool breeze adding to the ambience. Our first task for the day was to drive around the complex and checkout the resorts seafood restaurant, Mare for tonight’s anniversary dinner. The restaurant is 3.5 km north of the main house and sits on a spur overlooking the sea and cliff line to the south. It’s good view is only marked by the dense mist that sits on the ocean. Kaye is happy to have our celebratory dinner here. Our next task was to drive...

Jun 19, 2018 - Day 30 - Drive to Praia d’El Ray

This years trip to Portugal was inspired by a Luxury Escape 7 day package deal to the Marriot Resort at Praia d’El Rey (Obidos) which is on the coast 92 km from Lisbon. The dates chosen included the romantic thought of celebrating our forty eighth wedding anniversary ( hell - is it that long) on 20 June with a special dinner at the resort. We set off from Porto just before 0930 hrs very pleased with our experience of visiting Porto. Our first planned stop was Aveiro, the town promoted as the Venice of Portugal. As it was only 72 km along...

Jan 15, 2016 - Obidos, Portugal: Wonderful Medieval, Walled Town

It may not have been an easy trip from Sintra to Obidos, mainly because I didn't follow directions, but it was well worth the trouble. It was one of my best decisions to book a night in this Castle/Palace. The steep climb from the deserted train station could have been avoided if I had called the Pousada do Palacio for them to send a taxi for me. My room for $150 was in one of the castle towers with a view of the inner keep. My day here was another one of sunshine and I walked the entire wall around the town. At 10:30 AM the buses of...

Jan 14, 2016 - Sintra to Obidos, Portugal: Not So Easy

When planning a trip things that seem a good idea often aren't. The trip from Sintra to Obidos (pronounced like Oh my gosh, only Oh be gosh) is a good example. Sintra is a small town near Lisbon. Obidos is an even smaller town 2 hours north of Sintra and with little public transportation that I didn't take into consideration. The hotel in Sintra gave me one set of directions and the ticket master at the train station in Sintra gave me another. My mistake was in combining the directions, resulting in me traveling back and for on the train...

Oct 27, 2015 - Westbound to Obidos

What a weird weather day we had today! As we ate breakfast the sun was shining in a clear blue sky. An hour later when we brought our bags down it was drizzling but we could see clear sky behind. By the time we were due to leave the drizzle had stopped so no one was sure about whether to wear waterproofs or not and a rainbow in the Western sky farewelled us. More about the weather later. We left Batalha along a busy main road with cars and trucks rushing by. Maree confessed to being terrified by the traffic and to tell the truth I...
