Dec 16, 2016 - Presidential Plaza in Lima with two pictures added on 1/1/17
I'm in a little cafe in Pisco so will tell you about Lima yesterday. We have some great pictures of the Presidential Plaza that I'll send you once we get to our hotel in Buenos Aires and have wifi that is strong. The reason our pictures are so good is because the Plaza was blocked by police in full riot gear. They were expecting a demonstration in the square by citizens opposing the actions by their legislators against the newly elected president who won by 40,000 votes in a country of 35 million where voting is compulsory. So the police...Jump to full entry
Dec 15, 2016 - In Lima Peru
Beautiful overcast day so it is very pleasant even in 100% humidity. Our guide said Lima is nearing the 10 million people range based on the latest census. It is 77degrees temperature here and we are over 12 hours of daylight now. The exchange rate is 30 Sols to one dollar and there are money changers all around. Our ATM card would not work at the one bank that had an ATM in English so we had to use the street changers. Mira Flores is a part of town that has 80% of the high end hotels and tourist . The 45 minute drive to get here from...Jump to full entry
Dec 13, 2016 - Crossing the equator
On the 13th we crossed the equator about 6:30 in the morning. Even received a little certificate about it That means we were at 0 degrees latitude and 65 degrees latitude away from Fairbanks. Each day on board we enjoy two separate lectures that are an hour each. One is from a man who has traveled in South America a lot and gives great info in each country. The other is from a professor of archeology who has worked for National Geographic. Both lectures are standing room only since there are 3,000 passengers on the ship. Tomorrow we land...Jump to full entry
Aug 19, 2016 - Central Lima
An interesting day in Lima learning about ancient civilisations and sea worship. Phill didn't get to eat Guinea pig but he did partake of the local cola. It tastes like penicillin! The changing of the guard was fun with a brass band playing El Condor Pasa as black vultures flew overhead. Lots of school children had come on trips to watch but the ones near us ended up watching Izzy and Theo rather than the ceremony! Flying to Cuzco tomorrow.Jump to full entry
Aug 18, 2016 - Lima, Peru
Our first full day in Lima. Our hostel is more like a hotel which is good! We are slightly worried about the water but Izzy pointed out there are a lot of people living here so we should not stress too much!! Lots to see and do here for the next few days and we are close to a very smart supermarket!Jump to full entry
Jun 8, 2016 - Arrival Lima, Peru
We arrived safely in Lima very late Tuesday, June 7. The next morning, we were up early to meet the other travelers in our group. We spent the day visiting local sites and plazas in Lima. Lima has about 10,000,000 people, and I could tell by the number of people walking that the population was very dense. Traffic is absolutely horrible here. I will never complain about DC traffic again. It was literally quicker to walk than ride in a car or bus. There were many, many buses moving people about. We were told that all buses are privately...Jump to full entry
May 25, 2016 - On to Lima
No WiFi this morning when I got up had to go to front desk and have them turn it on, some work on the blog but internet real slow. Got a nice breakfast at the hotel, packed my bags and took down to lobby check out is at 9:00 am, then out to walk about Cusco, it is a holiday here so some places closed, and was a lot of church groups with huge floats of the Virgin Mary being carried by groups of men. I got on a city bus for a tour of the city from the roof top, a good way to see the city. A stop for lunch a plate of pork ribs and fries with a...Jump to full entry
Sep 28, 2015 - More airports.
Monday. Sleeping in felt so good. We did have to hit breakfast by 9 but our airport pick up wasn't until 11 so no real rush this morning. Here's the carry-over fallout from yesterday's debacle tho: we'd planned to do the rest of our shopping in Lima on Monday as we were supposed to stay at the same hotel we'd been at our first day: the El Tambo 2. We knew the area and had decided on the stores we wanted to go to and what we wanted to buy. Well, we were going to be stuck in the Lima airport all day (our Lima- Miami flight didn't leave until...Jump to full entry
Sep 23, 2015 - Travel day and Fun facts!
Wednesday Today, being just a travel day from Puno (left at 1:10pm) to Lima (arrived 3pm, left at 6pm) to Santiago, Chile (arrived 11pm), there's not a lot to share. Everything went well; all connections made. It was nice to arrive in Santiago and know that our hotel (Holiday Inn) was just outside the airport doors and not an hour drive away! So instead, I'll catch up on some info from past entries. At the hotel in Puno, Eco Inn, there were 6 alpacas in a pen just outside the restaurant. I noticed a baby all by itself the first day and...Jump to full entry
Sep 13, 2015 - Out and About in Lima
Sunday. While we were able to sleep in a bit this morning, the large tour group having breakfast right below our bedroom window started a whole lot earlier than we'd planned on getting up. Since the bed is the WORLD'S HARDEST bed, it wasn't too difficult to get up anyway. By the time we made it down to the breakfast room a little before 9, the tour group had moved on so it was more peaceful. We enjoyed a decent breakfast buffet and tried the Peruvian coffee....you know coffee's strong when even Jef had to add more milk to it so it was way...Jump to full entry
Aug 26, 2015 - Lima to Quito (or not)....
So there always has to be one shitty day during a holiday and this was it. After our stop at Sillustani and then our flight from Juliana to Lima - we arrived back at Casa Andina. Mick, Tash and Felix chilled in the pool and I took advantage of some fast wifi!! We had an interesting supper at Saqra - just down the road from the hotel. Interesting Peruvian food. As we were heading to the airport, our flight all looked good and on time. At check-in I noticed that our flight was due to take off at 15.35 as opposed to the 12.25 we were...Jump to full entry
Aug 8, 2015 - Johannesburg to Sao Paulo to Lima....
So it has been two rather full days of travelling, which have left us somewhat tired, but certainly very excited about the next part of our trip.... We left home early on Thursday morning, kids feeling rather smug, particularly Tash as we drove past St. Mary's and all of her friends were heading off to school. Flight to Sao Paulo was rather uneventful, always difficult flying though the day as they want to make you think it is the evening so you try and get some sleep, I think we all did get a little bit of sleep, but certainly not as much...Jump to full entry
