May 6, 2018 - May 6, 2018 – Lima, Peru

May 6, 2018 – Lima, Peru After 2 pisco sours last night, I slept like a log. I repacked my suitcases again as the pisco which I had bought early on in the trip was here at the hotel. Roberto and Walter had brought it back when they left us at Nazca. I went to breakfast about 8 and met up with Richard, Susan, Coleen, Gerhard, Robert and Diane. Robert and Diane will leave tomorrow to go to the Amazon for 4 days. Richard, Susan, Coleen and Gerhard are on the same flight to Houston that I am on. Since I had booked a day room for today, they...

May 5, 2018 - May 5, 2018 – Puno to Lima, Peru

May 5, 2018 – Puno to Lima, Peru We did not have to get up at the crack of dawn this morning as we didn’t leave the hotel until 10:20. We met, however, at 10 a.m. to celebrate Donna’s birthday. Cheo had gotten a cake for her with one candle on it (smart fellow). It was a really good Black Forest one. After that we headed out to the airport. Puno is so hilly that we had to drive for an hour outside of Puno to reach the airport. When we got there we got checked in for our 1:30 flight. The airport is a fairly small one, and there weren’t many...

Apr 22, 2018 - April 22, 2018 – Lima, Peru

April 22, 2018 – Lima, Peru I was awoken this morning by a couple of Americans who were talking and laughing loudly. Since the rooms open on a courtyard and since the windows are all open, I could hear everything they were saying. After they finally quit about 6:30, a couple started up in Spanish. I just decided to get up and be done with it. I had breakfast at the hotel and then came back to the room and repacked my suitcase. I brought an extra suitcase so am leaving some things here at the hotel so I don’t have to carry them with me....

Apr 21, 2018 - April 21, 2018 – Lima, Peru

April 21, 2018 – Lima, Peru It is another beautiful day. I had a late breakfast and then spent the morning just being lazy and getting caught up on my email. This afternoon, I was picked up at 3:30 for my tour of the Museo Arqueologico Rafael Larco Herrera (Larco Museum) and the Circuito Magico del Agua or Magic Water Park. I signed up for a group tour, but I was the only one so I had a private tour. My tour guide had worked at the Larco Museum for 8 years before becoming a tour guide so I had a really great tour of the Museum. The Museum...

Apr 20, 2018 - April 20, 2018 – Lima, Peru

April 20, 2018 – Lima, Peru This morning I took a city tour of Lima. To catch the bus, I had to go to the Larco Mar which is a shopping center built on a bluff overlooking the Pacific. I took a taxi from the hotel to the center. The tour bus was a double decker bus, and I was able to ride on the top deck. Unlike the bus in Quito which had windows but no roof (that is until we went under some low overpasses when they activated a sliding roof), this bus had no windows so you could get good pictures. It also had a sliding roof which could be...

Apr 19, 2018 - April 19, 2018 – Quito, Ecuador to Lima, Peru

April 19, 2018 – Quito, Ecuador to Lima, Peru I spent a quiet morning at the Hilton Colon by repacking my suitcase and reading. I checked out at noon which is the checkout time and spent the next 2.5 hours sitting in the lobby reading. I had the bellman put my suitcase and backpack in temporary storage so that I wouldn’t have to bother with them until I was ready to leave. At 2:45, I got my suitcases and was standing by the door waiting for the G Adventures arranged taxi to the airport. Glen and Libby were just getting out of a taxi. They...

Feb 11, 2018 - Paracas by the sea and our Mexican evening

Here’s a thing. What happens when you put suncream on and then change your shirt and shorts and go out on a bike without remembering that there are exposed parts without suncream on? Answer you get red knees and arms boooo. Fortunately you do not look like someone who still has the outline of her swimming costume showing even when she has taken it off. Obviously no names mentioned. So last night we had the long awaited Mexican evening. They had set up drinks bar, food bars and everyone serving were dressed up in what I assume were typical...

Feb 9, 2018 - Thursday 8th Lima with a half day tour.

Well here we are in the Capital city of Peru, Lima. Dave and Irene had arrived there originally from the UK. Had a swift breakfast and was greeted by our guide Sonia. She had plenty of knowledge and understanding but as we had heard the Pre Inca, Inca and Spanish eras it was very difficult to remain engaged. It was further strained when it appeared that the City tour was being conducted at speed and without photo stop opportunities due to traffic and time constraints. This clearly was not on but after a few poorly chosen stops for...

Feb 8, 2018 - Back to Lima for sun sea and stuff?

Today we woke at a sensible time 7 and then showered in nice water, shaved for th first time in five days- Irene is pleased to see this. The hotel is a Marriott and is really good quality in terms of facilities. Shame we are not here long enough to use them. But using as many as possible I treated my bites and wandered down to breakfast to have a nice quiet time. Ran round to the local launderette with two big bags of rather smelly clothes and then left to see the city. More to come as the bar is calling and the photos have not uploaded...

Jan 27, 2018 - Pisco Sours rule 𯑍

First full day in Lima. Went for a walk around the area which was very pleasant. Then back for breakfast including toast and marmalade. Irene even liked it as it was like a preserve rather our normal marmalade. Met at the hotel by the tour guide and went to look round a local market. Lots of new things to see and try so had a great time. Then we went to a restaurant by the ocean to make Pisco Sours. They were very nice and so sat outside listening to the waves lapping on the shore gently falling asleep. We went back in to make a traditional...

Nov 30, 2017 - Lima, Peru

Another private tour today. Let it be said that Callao port is extremely commercial now and very busy. We have a 15 minute bus ride just to get out of the port and sometimes they used 12 passenger vans as "buses". Stressful. And then once we started the tour Lima traffic was awful. First stop was the Pachacamac ruins south of the city of Lima. Our guide took us through the museum first and then we viewed the ruins which are extremely well preserved. The enormous site is very impressive with its great pyramidal temples, dwellings, remains of...

Oct 14, 2017 - SFO to DFW to Lima

We made it up to the airport in San Francisco (SFO) and through security with plenty of time to spare. Despite press reports of many delays due to the smoke from the wine country fires, we left right on time, and arrived at DFW with about 3 hours to kill before our flight to Lima. We looked for a Texas BBQ place that had been recommended by someone on the plane, but when we couldn't find it had dinner at TGI Friday's instead. BBQ ribs and a beer for Doug and a french dip sandwich for me. We didn't think about whether or not we'd be served...
