Aug 21, 2016 - The Sacred Valley

After a 1.5 hour flight from Lima to Cuzco we took a taxi down into the Sacred Valley. At 3326m Cuzco is pretty high so we decided to spend a week travelling through the lower areas first to build up our resistance. It is winter here but still dry and sunny. There is not as much snow on the Andes as we were expecting but it gets very cold at night. We have two nights here in Pisac and we spent the day at the market, mass at the church and then a hike down a steep hill! The indigenous people here are so tiny and they speak Quechua which as...

Our Year Out

Jun 13, 2016 - Machu Picchu

We visited Machu Picchu for 2 days. We arrived in the afternoon and had a hike throughout the ruins. The day was very sunny and our pictures reflect the beauty of the mountains. Hiking throughout the ruins was somewhat difficult because of the elevation. We were easily out of breath climbing the many, many stairs throughout the ruins. On our second visit, we had rain, and the rain cleared sufficiently to hike throughout the lower part of Machu Picchu. The morning was very foggy, as you will see from the pictures. I thought the pictures we...

Jun 9, 2016 - Lima to the City of Cusco

So we left Lima and flew to Cusco very early the following morning. The elevation of Cusco is higher than Lima. We took a day trip to the city square and a convent, but road along the countryside and was able to experience the beginning of the Sacred Valley. It is called the Sacred Valley because it is the one area where growing crops have always been successful. The right amount of water and the right amount of sun, with areas of very rich soil. You will see the statue of a guinea pig which is what they eat here in Peru. We will have an...

Sep 20, 2015 - Going 5 miles to get 1/2 a block...yi yi.

Sunday. It was nice to have no urgent reason to get up and get going today! We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast and then decided to go find the Museo de Historia Regional so we'd do something kind of constructive with our free day. Ah, best laid plans.... See the pciture of the map (#7 I think) to follow along. According to the map, the museum was #12 (toward the top of the map with the ?? next to it). Here's how that whole thing went: 1) Left our hotel to go to the Plaza de Armas (the big circle) as the museum was beyond that. At the plaza,...

Sep 19, 2015 - A Day in Ruins...literally.

Saturday. Ow, ow, ow, oooowwww....my legs are killing me from those stupid gnat bites. I'd post a pic but it's horrifically gross; the small bites have spread out to bright red "planets" all over. The skin has tightened up around each planet so everytime I move it hurts. elise's friend, Doug, visited Machu Picchu a couple of years ago and says his bug welts lasted for weeks...I can't handle that!!! I've coated them all with Neosporin tonight so hoping to see some improvement in the morning. You can tell who's been to MP already just walking...

Sep 18, 2015 - Moving on to Cuzco

Friday. Today was a bit of a wasted day in that we had almost all day free until we needed to be at the train station at 4:50pm. We had tickets to return to Machu Picchu on our own but we decided that we didn't feel the need to do that. After breakfast, we checked out of the hotel but were able to hang around the lobby as long as we wanted. We walked down the steep hill to the town square to see if there was something we wanted to do but as soon as we hit it, the biting gnats attacked! We'd sprayed with insect repellant but it didn't last...

Sep 17, 2015 - Machu Picchu!!

Thursday. The Sprite (and 24 hours) must have done the trick as Jef feeling better this morning. It was another early morning--up at 5:30am--to get to breakfast by 6. Jef was able to eat something and that helped a bit too. We leave the Hotel Augusto today and will stay at a hotel in Machu Picchu tonight. Our driver, Mr Abraham, and Condor rep, Ernesto, picked us up at 7am; we were the only ones in the car for the drive to Ollantaytambo where we'd pick up the train. The drive took about 30 minutes; we arrived in time to be 30 minutes early...

Sep 16, 2015 - Shopping .... oh yeah, and some more Inca ruins

Wednesday, 16th. So, well, the Franken-bed was 2 blankets, triple-folded and the "comforter", triple-folded, all stacked on top of each other. I really think it was better--it had to be-- but about 2am something Jef ate the last day or so caught up with him and he was back and forth to the bathroom all night vomitting. So not a restful night for either of us! He was still feeling crappy at 7am, when we had to go to breakfast so he stayed in bed and I went alone. He just didn't feel up to leaving the bedroom so I met the driver, Renaldo, at...
