Jan 20, 2018 - Las Penitas to Leon

Boo hoo, this is our final morning in this little paraiso. I have even become accustomed to our noisy little doves and geckos. I would love to stay for longer, but there are many other places to see in this gem of Central America. Misslady diligently prepares our 'factura' (invoice) by hand and we joke that's it will take forever as we have spent so much time here. She laughs and claims, 'no, you should stay longer'. Bags packed and ready to go we take last minute photos, and say our goodbyes with a promise to return soon, maybe even next...

Jan 19, 2018 - Las Penitas

Another tough day dawns in paradise. Put on our uniform - bathing suit, check; sun dress, check; sun screen, check; coffee in hand, check and ready for the day. I am going to miss this place; the peacefulness, the relaxation, the simplicity of it all. Misslady, Luz & Fatima are always smiling, laughing and ready to chat. We have a wonderful breakfast and back to the hard work of sunning our northern pale bodies. The sun is hot, however the pool feels like ice until our bodies adjust. We strike up a conversation with Kimberlie, who...

Jan 18, 2018 - Las Penitas

We are getting into a lovely routine. Coffee on the patio, and then a leisurely breakfast. Today we have a collection of visitors having breakfast, a lady from BC and 6 from the US, four of whom live here in Nicaragua. One couple, Sue & Michael, live at the far end of the beach in Las Penitas from Oct - March each year. The other couple have lived here for the past 5 years and now live year round in Laguna Apoyo (midway between Masaya & Granada). This is the second time we have been told this area is fabulous, so may need to look into...

Jan 17, 2018 - Las Penitas

Another leisurely morning dawns.......we roll out of bed and 10 steps away we grab a coffee and sit on our private patio overlooking the pool and beach - now this is vacation! We chat amicably with the other guests while having our breakfast alfresco. Second order of the day, dipping our toes in the surf of the Pacific. The undertow is so strong it knocked Fero to his knees, much to his surprise. I therefore didn't venture in too far, rather I chose to pick lovely seashells freshly churned up by the waves. We sat on the beach until the the...

Jan 16, 2018 - Las Penitas

Our dearest fine feathered friends, the kukuckas (doves), woke us up around 6am with their incessant cooing. Oh my word, they were loud! Slowly we awake and ate a leisurely breakfast, chatting with our hotel mates and deciding on today's agenda. Eventually we decide to walk towards the busier end of the beach. I asked Misslady how far it was to 'El Centro' and she just laughed at me. This is a surfing beach and has a collection of hostels, restaurants and a nice hotel or two, the beach and the surf, no such thing as a centre! It is only...

Jan 15, 2018 - Managua to Leon & Las Penitas

A delicious breakfast consumed, packed and ready to go, Gerald arrives. It is so great to see our friend, as he has become just that, our good Nicaragua friend - Fero calls him my 'buddy'. We head out of Managua and Fero inquires if we are going the right direction as this doesn't look like the highway. Gerald and I just laugh - only Fero would question a local tour guide. The two kibbitz back and forth which brings lovely giggles from Gerald, and so the day begins. With Gerald, being the tour guide extraordinaire that he is, there is no...

Mar 13, 2014 - The Lazy Turtle

Well I landed here in Las Penitas and went straight to a place called the Lazy Turtle. I walked through the doors and was welcomed like I was family. The Canadian couple that owns it are really friendly and super helpful. I've been here a few times before so I know my way around a but but they really help learning where things are and who to talk to. The first night here they invited me to go for supper with them and I met a few more Canadian people that own businesses here. The rooms are nice and are actually cool with the ocean breeze...

Mar 10, 2014 - Las Penitas

I had a pretty good weekend in Leon and in general it was pretty quiet. I hooked up with a van full of people headed to Salinas Grandes to a small hostal there. The highlight of the night was this glow in the dark plankton that glows based on movement. The top of the waves looked like glowsticks as they curled and crashed. We were supposed to have a huge bonfire and big party on the beach but despite the great location not many came. We left Leon at 7pm and it was so lame we decided to head back to Leon at 11. So that's twice I've been to...

Feb 24, 2014 - Las Penitas

Well Saturday morning I was eating some breakfast at a local restaurant and two young women from Germany came and asked if they could join my table. Of course I said ok and turns out they teach German at the local University. We went for drinks and supper later that night and the following day we decided to go to the beach at Las Penitas. We left right after breakfast and took a chicken bus for the 15 km trip which takes about 35-40 minutes. These buses are unique in that they keep packing in more and more people until they are literally...

Mar 15, 2010 - Las Penitas

Today was off to the beach all day. The Pacific Coast was great! But again Hot! Hot! Hot! The sand at the beach was so hot , you had to wear your shoes. i tried sun tanning , that was short lived , i had to go to the water to stay cool. The waves were extreme, soo strong, something else. The ride to get to the beach was once again on the back of a small pick up truck , but this time it was just our family. So about 30 minutes , cruising as fast as they can down the highway in the back of a pick up truck, great fun!! I don´t think the girls...
