Jan 12, 2020 - Leon

We arrived in Leon on Friday, Jan 10th. The first afternoon we walked to the main square stopping off at Carnivore for lunch...basically huge tacos. From here we went on to the Central Plaza. It is a huge square in front of the cathedral with lots of vendors selling touristy kitsch, a sidewalk restaurant Seseta. It has white buildings surrounding it..some are like corner stores, a Revolution Museum, bars that sell hot dogs as well as beer. We took a street from one corner walked 2 blocks and over one to a private art museum with a...

Connor's adventure

Mar 4, 2018 - Boarding the Black Volcano - Cerro Negro

Up at 6:00 after a chilly night. Get dressed and down to a breakfast of fruit and papaya. The hotel clerk gives us a coupe extra waters and off we go to the hotel we were at last night which is to be the pickup for the day. We were supposed to meet at 8:00 and no one showed, so we wandered around to several tour places asking if they were the ones – but no luck. We took a walk and visited a local Catholic Church where mass was being said, but only stayed a minute or two. At about 8:45 the truck shows up! About 20 people on the open truck –...

A Week in Nicaragua

Mar 3, 2018 - From home to Leon, Nicaragua

Up pretty early and Kitty and Alice feed the critters. Then we pack the car and head for Dulles! Stop at Sheetz on the way to gas up and then head up route 29. No major issues. Stop at the Sheetz in Opal but all the gas tank were either empty of occupied, so we got some snacks and continued on our way. Got to the Wingate in Chantilly and parked the car. Very windy day so quite cool. We only had to wait about 15 minutes before the driver showed up and we were at the airport a bit before noon. As we had our tickets printed out we checked our...

A Week in Nicaragua

Jan 21, 2018 - Leon

We awoke up one minute before the 7:00am city siren - what the heck! Even on Sundays it goes off and sounds like an air raid or a tsunami siren. Thankfully we were already awake, or it may have given us a heart attack. We take our time heading to breakfast as we will just take it easy today. I head out around 9:00am to see if I can do the Cathedral roof tour. It is one of the most popular things to do in Leon with a stunning view of the city. Yippeee the roof is open on Sunday. Along with about 50 others, I climb the stairs to the Cathedral...

Jan 20, 2018 - Las Penitas to Leon

Boo hoo, this is our final morning in this little paraiso. I have even become accustomed to our noisy little doves and geckos. I would love to stay for longer, but there are many other places to see in this gem of Central America. Misslady diligently prepares our 'factura' (invoice) by hand and we joke that's it will take forever as we have spent so much time here. She laughs and claims, 'no, you should stay longer'. Bags packed and ready to go we take last minute photos, and say our goodbyes with a promise to return soon, maybe even next...

Jan 19, 2018 - Las Penitas

Another tough day dawns in paradise. Put on our uniform - bathing suit, check; sun dress, check; sun screen, check; coffee in hand, check and ready for the day. I am going to miss this place; the peacefulness, the relaxation, the simplicity of it all. Misslady, Luz & Fatima are always smiling, laughing and ready to chat. We have a wonderful breakfast and back to the hard work of sunning our northern pale bodies. The sun is hot, however the pool feels like ice until our bodies adjust. We strike up a conversation with Kimberlie, who...

Jan 18, 2018 - Las Penitas

We are getting into a lovely routine. Coffee on the patio, and then a leisurely breakfast. Today we have a collection of visitors having breakfast, a lady from BC and 6 from the US, four of whom live here in Nicaragua. One couple, Sue & Michael, live at the far end of the beach in Las Penitas from Oct - March each year. The other couple have lived here for the past 5 years and now live year round in Laguna Apoyo (midway between Masaya & Granada). This is the second time we have been told this area is fabulous, so may need to look into...

Jan 17, 2018 - Las Penitas

Another leisurely morning dawns.......we roll out of bed and 10 steps away we grab a coffee and sit on our private patio overlooking the pool and beach - now this is vacation! We chat amicably with the other guests while having our breakfast alfresco. Second order of the day, dipping our toes in the surf of the Pacific. The undertow is so strong it knocked Fero to his knees, much to his surprise. I therefore didn't venture in too far, rather I chose to pick lovely seashells freshly churned up by the waves. We sat on the beach until the the...

Jan 16, 2018 - Las Penitas

Our dearest fine feathered friends, the kukuckas (doves), woke us up around 6am with their incessant cooing. Oh my word, they were loud! Slowly we awake and ate a leisurely breakfast, chatting with our hotel mates and deciding on today's agenda. Eventually we decide to walk towards the busier end of the beach. I asked Misslady how far it was to 'El Centro' and she just laughed at me. This is a surfing beach and has a collection of hostels, restaurants and a nice hotel or two, the beach and the surf, no such thing as a centre! It is only...

Jan 15, 2018 - Managua to Leon & Las Penitas

A delicious breakfast consumed, packed and ready to go, Gerald arrives. It is so great to see our friend, as he has become just that, our good Nicaragua friend - Fero calls him my 'buddy'. We head out of Managua and Fero inquires if we are going the right direction as this doesn't look like the highway. Gerald and I just laugh - only Fero would question a local tour guide. The two kibbitz back and forth which brings lovely giggles from Gerald, and so the day begins. With Gerald, being the tour guide extraordinaire that he is, there is no...

Nov 12, 2017 - Leon, Nicaragua

Today was a loooooooonnnng day! We left our cabana at 5am to get to the dock to catch the 2 hour ferry to the mainland. Then we got a 12 hour shuttle, crammed on a minibus with 15 randoms, to cross the border into Nicaragua to finally get to Leon at 2am. We had a day to explore Leon, an industrial town with not so many tourists, only really interesting because it was a hotbed of rebels during the revolution. There are lots of murals celebrating the revolution where a milatary dictatorship was overthrown to bring peace; we saw quite a few...
