Jan 30, 2016 - Feilding (yes it is spelt right) to Wellington

Stayed in lovely motel overnight all very modern and no vacancies. These stock fairs must be popular! Turns out they have a farmers market every fri as well so town is buzzing. Quick wander tound town and market and then off for our tour of yards. We are shown around by newly retired sheep farmer who is obviously missing his job but is also grateful to be out of what has become a quite stressful job according to news reports about how difficult it is for farmers. Actually he is the second retired farmer we have spoken to in a week and both...

Jan 7, 2016 - New Zealand Parliment...then a Cable Car Ride Up/walk down

If you come to Wellington, take the free hour long tour of Parliment. Go ahead of the time you want to take the tour and sign up in advance. During the hour tour you will learn about how New Zealand grew and revised the structure of their representative government over time. While still a government called a Constitutional Monarchy (head of state is a hereditary monarch - Queen Elizabeth), the powers and functions of the Sovereign are exercised within constitutional constraints (elected Prime Minister/elected Representatives). It was...

Jan 6, 2016 - A must see museum and a walk around Parliment

When you come to Wellington be sure and go to the the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. It is the national museum and is very well done. It will take you a half of day to see all the excellent exhibits - four solid floors of excellent history, botany, and Maori influence as well as excellent science exhibits on tectonic faults, earthquakes, animals of New Zealand and the seas. One section was a reminder of the pest that possum's have become as it described the 70 million possums and how they interfere with various aspects of the...

Jan 5, 2016 - Spectacular scenery on the ferry to Wellington and the Botanical Gardens

We sailed out of Picton at 9AM this morning in sunny skies and calm seas. The Picton harbor picture is a good view from the large ferry we were on. There were many more passengers riding in vehicles rather than 'walk on' folks like us -- it is amazing to see how many cars, campers, vans, and semi-trucks can fit in the ferry. We were on a smaller one that holds 550 passengers and 250 vehicles. As you can see from the Wellington harbor photo, it was also a lovely day in Wellington. It is the capital of New Zealand and is a large, bustling...

Jan 4, 2016 - Wellington, New Zealand

We celebrated Patrick's birthday in Wellington, New Zealand and had a great day. Wellington is the home of the Westpac Stadium - the home of the New Zealand All Blacks Rugby Team. Wellington was a lovely, older town. While we were walking around we saw a nice New Zealand daddy, out for an adventure with his 4 kids. While the daddy was busy on his phone and the other 3 kids were running around in a little park-like area, the baby, who was probably about 2, very efficiently took off all his clothes and hopped into a fountain for a little...

The Voyager is making stops at ports in New Zealand on this cruise, which is one of Pete's favorite itineraries. He had a good day in Wellington today and took the opportunity to get off the ship and stretch his legs a little bit. Everything is going just fine.

Dec 11, 2015 - Wellington

We left Turangi quite early as we had a fairly long drive to Wellington. ...about 4.5 hours and as we only had one night here we wanted to get there as soon as possible. We had a good run with a couple of interesting stops such as Bulls town ...quite quirky with some great signage, a touristy honey centre and Otaki which was an outlet shopping town....every shop in the street doing lots of bargains, selling high street clothes etc at low low prices. We couldn't buy anything too much because of the internal flight weight restrictions!!! We...

Dec 9, 2015 - South to North

Driving into Picton from the north was a perspective we'd not seen when we left Picton at the end of October. The huge freighter loading logs explained the hundreds of trucks loaded with logs we'd seen over the past 6 weeks. The ferry ride back to Wellington felt like leaving home; the South Island had grown upon us. We'll miss it. Wellington was a quick visit though we did attend a Christmas one man play about Dylan Thomas and his boyhood days in Wales; A Child's Christmas. Driving north from Wellington it was quickly evident we were no...

Dec 4, 2015 - Road trip - exploring north of Wellington

Today we headed up north along the coast towards Kapiti. We drove up the coast and in Paekakariki we found Queen Elizabeth Park where we hiked this coastal/wetland area. SPECIAL BATHROOM ALERT - we found ourselves in need and used a local park toilet (not any ordinary toilet). Reaka went first and came out giggling and said I must give it a go (so to speak). Magically, the toilet spoke to you, told you to lock the door, stated that your allotted time was 10 minutes, then played music and thanked you when you were leaving - I said you are...

Dec 3, 2015 - Exploring Wellington - and Zealandia

Today we were greatly saddened to learn that another mass shooting was taking place in the US (San Bernardino). Earlier during our trip in Colorado Springs - and now San Bernardino (and Savannah, GA the same day of San Bernardino as we read later in a newspaper)- how very tragic. This first part of our day was watching the news and hoping what we were watching wasn't really happening..... again. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who is having to deal with domestic or international terrorist acts - whether in the U.S. or abroad. Our...

Dec 2, 2015 - Travel day - Flying to Wellington

Ok - so not my preferred mode of transportation - a 50 seat two propeller plane - where you look back in the aisle and can see your luggage! I have to admit, though, that the flight went really well - especially since it only lasted about 1 hour. We'd heard that the mountains we were flying over were beautiful - but all we saw were the clouds that were the order of the day. Wellington is another vibrant NZ city. Upon arrival, we dropped off our luggage and took a stroll along the wharf. (Special treat: black licorice ice cream -yum yum...
