Waihi Beach Day 168 Mark leaves me in bed to try to sleep off this bug I still have and I don’t surface until midday. My mouth is still sore but I don’t want to waste the rest of the day by sitting around. We decide we’ll just drive down to the local beach and have a walk. The town of Waihi where we are staying is an 11km drive from the beach through lush farmland. We drive to the northern end of the long white beach which stretches 9km south to Bowentown. Nov 30, 2013 - Trip over to Waihi and Waihi Beach

Waihi has developed around gold and silver deposits discovered in the late 1800s in the quartz veins in Martha Hill adjacent. Over the years up to 19 different levels were tunnelled into the hillside making it quite unstable so now it has been changed to a HUGE open cast mine over 300m deep. Initially they were only extracting 60% of the ore from the quartz but a new process using cyanide was developed in Edinburgh in the late 1900s which now extracts 90% of the ore.
