We left the farmstay at about 1:00 pm. A couple of the other people wanted to do more bone carving so they got up early and got back to it. I spent the time playing ping pong and packing up my junk. We drove farther along the east cape and tried to get to the lighthouse right at the most easterly point of NZ, but the road was closed. Oh well, that was supposed to be our activity for the day. Feb 1, 2006 - Whanarua Bay on the East Cape

Stumbling onto a prize spot is always one of the best things about travel, and the Backpackers in Whanarua Bay is just one of those! The Maraehako Bay Retreat is a beautiful house built into the rocks and overhang, literally on top of the water. The house is built around two beautiful pohutukawa trees, with the waves lapping up at the doors of the rooms on the ground floor!
