Jan 28, 2019 - Glow worms and Kiwis

A late start today as we have only 150 km to go to the Waitomo Glow-worm caves. The day starts out hot and sunny but deteriorates into light rain and cloud as we climb into the mountains. Then as we get closer to the coast and Waitomo it once again turns into a lovely hot day. The coolness of the caves and their constant 16C temperature will be very welcome. Waitomo township is a Maori community of only 300 people. The name Waitomo come from Wai (water) and Tomo (entrance/hole). The Maori refer to this as the stream which flows into the...

Dec 5, 2013 - Hot Water Beach to Waimoto

Mar 17, 2012 - 50th birthday

Some birthday pictures. As you can see, we had a very good day. We started off with a swim in the sunshine on our private beach, then drove north through stunning scenery to our luxury B+B. We enjoyed some fine Kiwi bubbly in the hot tub; I opened some pressies and cards and then we ate a delicious three course dinner, finishing off with a large portion of pavlova. Now heading up to Auckland to catch the plane to Melbourne tomorrow.

Jun 17, 2011 - Worms and Kiwis

Then onboard at 1930 to a pleasant Air New Zealand flight with a few wines and not enough sleep. Landed in Auckland at about 0630 (with about two hours sleep) and jumped off to try and get the car rental Why the hell it takes car rental companies so long to give you a car when you have entered all the details electronically when you booked the car has got me stuffed! must have been at least 15 minutes there just trying to get the car. it's not like the guy behind the counter was a dunderhead, just that the system is so bloody inefficient....

Oct 1, 2009 - Worms That Glow in the Dark, Work Well for Night Fishing

Glow Worms are a go! The tour people informed us that we would be able to take the Glow Worm Cave Tour but that the boat ride portion of the tour would be a bit abbreviated. The caverns were big enough that I didn't feel terribly clausto and glowing worms are cool. After the tour we hiked a trail nearby that took you thru a rain forest area and a group of caves and rock that had been carved out by the same river that forms the caves the Glow Worms are in. We are anxious to get to the South Island so we moved on towards Wellington were we...

Sep 30, 2009 - Rain and Driving

Walking back and forth to the outhouse afew times can track alot of sheep poop into your vehicle. ALOT of sheep poop. We had to line the floor of our Spaceship with plastic bags to keep the level down and the stink off. I spent the better part of the next half day shuffleing my feet at every rest stop to get the stuff off my shoes. We left out "Field of Dreams" and set out for the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves. The rain managed to find us and follow along for most of the trip. When we got to Waitomo we were informed that the caves were flooded!...

Jun 18, 2008 - Waitomo to Otorohanga North Island 28th to 29th May 2008.

Sylvia’s comments This morning we are booked on to the 10am trip to the Ruakuri Caves and were told to wait for our transport at the front of the camp site. When a small tour van, with ‘Legendary Black Water Rafting Company’ written on it, pulled in I thought Jeff had booked something different and I went into a faint at the very thought of it. However it seems this is an advertisement feature on all of their vehicles and we were on the correct trip. Waitomo seems to be a ‘must do’ on the NZ adventure activities pilgrimage. The name means...

Apr 4, 2006 - Blackwater

We head off in the rain again on Monday for the caves at Waitomo, though by the time we arrive it has turned into a very warm day. Todays activity is Tumi Tumi Toobing, or caving with inner tubes. Kitted out in wetsuits, helmets and white abbatoir-style wellies we head for one of over 600 limestone caves in the area. They are famous for their gloworms, a quite amazing sight that greets us almost right inside the cave. The little 'worms' are infact larvae which loter around for 9 of their 12 month lives, with thin webs suspended to catch...
