Spent the day exploring the Otago Peninsular. Highlight was the Royal Albatross nesting site at the cape, where we watched 2 adults on nest with chicks and one more mature chick on its own in the nest. These birds are HUGE – adults have 3 metre wingspans and after initial disappointment we were treated to one flying overhead. Magic. The plan was to drive through the Catlins along the coast road but we went a wee bit wrong and ended up considerably inland and driving a lot further than intended ! Jun 3, 2006 - Catlins

Deciding to make the most of our last free weekend before the ski season kicked off, Zara (a friend from work) and I decided to check out the Catlins which is a region of beautiful coastline and wildlife filled bays stretching from Waipapa Point in Southland to Nugget Point in South Otago. We left after work on Friday and drove to Invercargill and stayed with friend's for the night.
