Nov 30, 2015 - Whakatane

Whakatane It was a really early start today as we wanted a last early morning walk along the gorgeous beach before checking out of Waihi Beach. We were able to check out a bit late so we didn't have to rush back which was great...an amazing start to the day. Stopped at a small town called Katikati where we had a lovely picnic in the park and saw a low key but very effective WW1 exhibit in what used to be the local fire station, which closed in 1952. Again the ladies running it were incredibly welcoming and were really interested in where we...

Dec 20, 2006 - Napier, The Bay of Plenty & Whangarei, New Zealand

We wanted to check out the East side of the North Island but only had a few days in which to do it which meant rather a whirlwind tour of the coast. Napier was our first stop and is renowned for being the 'Art Deco' capital of NZ. Most of the town was destroyed by an earthquake in the 30's and was consequently rebuilt in the style of the time. It also has a great cafe culture so we wandered around taking in the architecture and stopped for a caffeine fix when it was required. Next stop was the Bay of Plenty and the Coromandel Peninsula...

Dec 5, 2005 - Whakatane (Ohope Beach)

The drive to Whakatane was a drizzley drive and we came across a horrible sight, after coming down a few very steep hills in the rain we came across a car in a ditch at the side of the road on it's side! I slowed down not knowing what we were going to find as there was no town for 15km and we hadn't passed a house or car for ages, no signal on our phones either. Then a hand came out of the shattered drivers window our hearts were beating so fast, as we got closer you could see that the car had rolled over a few times and was badly damaged....

Sep 14, 2005 - New Zealand - Whakatane

We left Napier and drove up the coast. We were thinking of driving all the way around the bay but the roads were not great and the weather was coming in so we took a short cut to get to Whakatane. Whakatane is a port town where tours to the White Island are run from. This is the only active volcano in New Zealand so we thought we should pay a visit ! We checked into our hostel and then took a walk around town to the japanese gardens and down to the waterfront. It is quite a sleepy little town and is nice to stroll around. Unfortunately the...
