May 18, 2007 - 90 Mile Beach

From the sand dunes begins the 90 Mile Beach, which oddly enough is only 60 miles long? That stumped us too! You're advised to 1) have a 4 wheel drive and 2) plenty of petrol before you begin this journey, we had both so it was all systems go. You drive down a stream and join the beach which you're giving permission to drive down rather than take the windy hilly slow road back along the coast. It's actually a public road now and has a 100km speed limit! As far as the eye can see and beyond is a long wide beach which you can pretty much tank...

Dec 1, 2005 - North Island's West Coast

After working our way up New Zealand's beautiful East Coast, we crossed over to the wild West side. This side of the country borders the windy and rough Tasman sea, and is even more remote feeling than the East coast. We're amazed by how few people there are. We would literally drive for miles without seeing another car, house, or sign of human life- it was refreshing after the population density of Asia. And the few locals that we did see were so friendly. The Kiwis seem to always smile and strike up a conversation. Just asking directions...
