Crossing the Cook's Strait from Wellington (on the North island) to Picton (on the South island) takes about three hours and after our early start it was a good wake-up call with the fresh wind in our faces and the superb scenery as we navigated through the Marlbourough Sounds and onto the South. A two-hour drive south on the east coast found us in Kaikoura, a hotspot for whale spotting and swimming with dolphins. Sep 17, 2004 - Campervan adventures - South Island, New Zealand

Spent a couple of nights in Auckland to get organised and then flew to Christchurch in the South Island to start the "Campervan Adventure". The van was a big ford transit van decked out with a double bed, shower, toilet, cooker, microwave, kettle, toaster etc. It was quite spacious inside and very comfortable to sleep in. We had the van for 12 nights and travelled over 1600 miles. The scenery was really lovely, snowy mountains and green rivers.
