Apr 25, 2018 - Noumea, New Caledonia

A rainy day in Noumea. Russell and Graeme from the Sunshine Coast had organized an island tour and needed four people to join them, so we and our friends Michelle and Gary from northern California decided to join them. The island was industrial for the most part and had a lot of squalor and squatters. Not exactly what I imagined the South Pacific to be like. We went to the City Marketplace and then went to several lookout points, including Baie de La Moselle and Anse Vata Bay. We had lunch at the Ouemo Mangroves. We picked up some salami...

When Captain Cook sailed by here (there doesn’t seem to be an island that he missed), he named the island group New Caledonia. Why he thought of Caledonia which is in Scotland while he was looking at palm trees is a mystery to me, but perhaps the man was getting homesick on his four year voyage. We docked in Noumea, which is the capital of the country and has 40% of the population of 300,000. The New Caledonia island group belongs to France, for whom they must be a huge financial drain. There is a major referendum scheduled here in November...

Another beach day for the ship found Pete working onboard, rather than getting off to stick his toes in the sand. Everything is going along just fine and he is feeling well. Some of the cruises during Australia go to several island ports in Vanutu and New Caledonia and Pete is not as interested in those ports as he is in the towns in New Zealand.

Pete visited Noumea for another quick stop before 3 days at sea again. This is an 11 day cruise so they are heading back to Sydney to Turn Around. This time on the ship covers a lot of miles because the main ports are quite far from the stopover ports on each cruise. Everything is going well with Peter and he is feeling fine. As of today, Pete has traveled 63,928 miles since he left Indianapolis about 19 weeks ago.

Nov 13, 2015 - Isle of Pines, New Caledonia

The Isle of Pines is an island in the South Commune of New Caledonia (I was not able to find it on the map for the travel journal but it is not far from Noumea. It's nickname is "The closest island to paradise!" which sounds pretty good! It is surrounded by the New Caledonia Barrier Reef. High temperatures are in the 80's right now. Everything is going fine for Pete and he is enjoying getting off the ship in these beautiful locations.

Pete had a nice visit in Noumea and things are going well on the ship. He still does not know what will happen with the leadership of the band when the Music Director, David, transfers to another ship in early December but he is not worried about it, one way or another. He said, other than David's replacement, the personnel in the entertainment division is secure until Pete leaves in February so it should be a fairly easy time for whoever takes over. Hopefully no one will get sick, which happened when Pete was the Music Director when David...

Good Morning FOBTs, The Oosterdam is in the process of docking in Noumea, New Caledonia, which still uses the French Pacific Franc as its monetary currency. Obviously, that comes from its status as a French territory. New Caledonia is a cluster of islands with Noumea as the capital on the largest island, Grand Terre. The Coral Sea is the main body of water dominating the area, and if you have never heard of the Coral Sea, I suggest you Google it because it was a pivotal part of WW II between the US and Australia versus Japan. I will be...

Peter checked in after leaving Noumea and things were going very well. He talked quite a bit about the new folks who have recently joined the band and about how things were going, musically, and he seems very pleased with their success. He also told us that, because of a typhoon in the Fiji region, their itinerary was being altered and that he would check in with us soon about the new location.

Pete checked in from Noumea and things were going well. He had a busy day and did not actually have time to leave the ship. Part of his day was spent taking training as a life boat commander, which will be one of his responsibilities when he is Music Director in a week or so. He thinks it is pretty funny that he will be certified to pilot a lifeboat before he is licensed to drive a car! He is looking forward to getting settled in his new routine.

Peter checked in from Noumea and things were going well. The weather was nice and he had left the ship for awhile but there is not much to do in the port so he didn't stay long. The weather is fine, with temperatures in the 80's and quite a bit of rain.

Pete added another new country to his list today when he visited New Caledonia for the first time. It is basically a tropical island, with most of the activities centered around the beach. There was not too much to interest Peter in the port but he had a very busy schedule on the ship anyway and did not have much time to linger. Things are going well.

Feb 28, 2014 - Noumea, New Caledonia

Woke just after 6am to find we were in sight of land. Cloudy & rain in the distance. The island of New Caledonia appears to be forested & very green - at least on this side. Queen Victoria came alongside in the commercial port just before 9am. We were greeted by a group in traditional costume (grass skirts). They were drumming & first the 4 warriors performed some very aggressive looking/sounding dances which included brandishing menacing looking spears. If I had been Captain Cook I think I'd have been tempted to turn back to my ship! These...
