Apr 24, 2013 - Keukenhof Gardens- Daffodils, Hyacinths and Tulips!

Today we visited the famous Keunkenhof Gardens along with a fair few more. In the 15th century this area was little more than scrubland and dunes owned by the Countess Jacqueline of Bavaria at Teylingen Castle nearby. In the courtyard herbs and vegetables were grown for the kitchen hence the name Keukenhof-Kitchen Courtyard. In 1949 a group of leading local bulb growers came up with the idea of an open-air spring flower show to promote the growing of flowers from bulbs on the Keukenhof estate. We spent the day at Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse, Netherlands - a bit south of Amsterdam. Wow! We hit the timing perfect for tulips in bloom. The photos say it all.

Apr 16, 2011 - The Netherlands Flower Parade

We took a drive south of Amsterdam, near Lisse, to see the Flower Parade. This is an annual parade in the Netherlands so we thought we'd try to catch it. The theme this year was Musical Parade 2011. Surprisingly almost all the floats featured musicals well-known in the USA. We watched amidst the multilingual crowd, smiling in agreement to Dutch conversation and marveling at the elaborate work involved in creating these impressive floats. We have posted a few pictures and video snippets of some of these.
