Apr 1, 2017 - Free day in Cancun

The alarm woke us at 5:00am for our transfer to LA airport to begin the next stage of our trip. Due to the early start it only took about 40 minutes to get to the airport and to our United flight to Mexico. We had a leisurely breakfast and the settled down for the two hour wait till boarding. As it happened we almost missed our plane because we were dutifully waiting for them to call our boarding group and they didn't. Eventually I looked up at a TV screen and our boarding group 5 was shown but no announcement had been made. The plane was...

Feb 2, 2017 - Cozumel

Cozumel is a small island a ferry ride away from Cancun on the Yucatan peninsula. Tourists like us have been coming here for many years to snorkel, fish, and enjoy the beaches. To keep us coming back, the locals keep adding attractions that are really from other parts of Mexico. Because we have been here many times we looked for something new, so that meant we ended up with some of these "imports." We started with a chocolate tour. The chocolate pods are not grown here, but the factory/museum/store did a good job of explaining how chocolate...

Dec 30, 2016 - Colombia – Bogota – via Cancun

Vancouver to Cancun And we are off on our next adventure to Colombia. Our departure from Vancouver went smoothly (although EXTREMELY early) and we arrived in Cancun late in the afternoon. Our flight itinerary included a forced overnight in Cancun, oh darn 𯘄. It is a balmy 26C with the occasional spurts of tropical rain to add to the humidity. Great for the skin! We arrived at our airport hotel quickly, and before too long had a margarita and a cerveza in hand. Welcome cocktail finished we ventured out to find authentic Mexican food in the...

Sep 7, 2016 - Cozumel, Mexico

Arrived on this island just off Mexico and Izzy immediately became a top shopper! She found out via the cruise staff that all of the big jewellery and diamond stores give away charms and coins so she was on a mission to collect them all. After a morning of shopping and trying to work out which shops were telling the truth (!) we headed out to a coral beach for some snorkelling. It was perfect water- not too deep and very clear. We saw some unusual fish plus we found a rock where lots gathered. The kids loved the tiniest fish which was...

Our Year Out

Apr 13, 2016 - Cancun Aeropuerto

It's about 500 kilometers from Campeche to Cancun so I arranged to return to Valladolid for our last night, leaving just a 2 hour drive the next day to reach the airport in Cancun. The drive went easily. A few stops along the way so the Policia could check us out. Didn't have to pay a single "mordita" the whole trip. Back to Casa Hipil. The Aussies went shopping and I caught up on the journal. Later we went out to dinner at El Meson del Marques, the local Colonial Hotel and hot spot. Another excellent meal. And the usual round of tequila...

Apr 5, 2016 - Playa del Carmen y Los Ruinas

Playa del Carmen After some initial confusion at the airport I connected with my two Australian companions and picked up our rental car from Edgar, the ISIS representative (an unfortunate name for a rental car company, I admit) and headed South from Cancun to Playa del Carmen. Our lodging was inside the gated community of Playamor - not exactly my usual stomping ground. Clearly there is a lot of wealth here. Playa has grown from a laid back beach town to a fairly glitzy resort area. The last of the Spring Break crowd were still around but...

Feb 21, 2016 - Me Cancun

Loved Me Cancun, spent most days on the beach, Patrick upgraded to a beautiful ocean front balcony room and it was wonderful! As always, loved the Tequileria, spent a morning at Isla Murjeres and found a great little tucked away INN on the island with the best pina coladas! Casa Bella was the name, owned by a cute American woman named Ashley and her husband. they built it 14 years ago. Went clubbing w the crazy group in downtown Cancun~Patrick was offered cocaine in the mens room! ugh!

Feb 9, 2016 - finishing off in style!

Our days in Playa del Carmen have been spent wandering, as we always do, with the added fun of looking for accommodation for one night. In all our previous trips to wherever we have ventured we have been lucky, I suppose, in finding good places to stay (for the most part!). The Yucatan seems to be the exception to this rule as the places have been fine but several times we have not been able to extend our stay beyond a night or two. So if we like the town we have to hit the streets to find another hostel or motel. This has been the case in...

Jan 8, 2016 - extra legroom!

We welcomed our renters about 4pm Friday, 08 January and ready or not our 2016 holiday trek began. A trip over to visit Ryan in Alberni for Friday and Saturday nights started us off in style then down to Victoria for an evening of fun and frivolity with "the gang of 8" at Lari & Gayles house. Lari dropped us at the ferry so we and our backpacks took the easy jaunt across to stay with Erin and Laura in Yaletown. A 4:15 AM departure to catch our flight south brought out the best in Donna as she chatted pleasantly with the cabbie and there...

Dec 19, 2015 - From Ruins to Chillin' on the Beach

After leaving Izamal, the plan was Chichén Itzá, then on to Paamul to enjoy the beach. Love the plan ... and it worked like a charm ... Izamal to Chichén Itzá Chichén Itzá is on the outskirts of the town of Piste. Really, there isn't much there except a small pueblo, loads of restaurants that cater to busloads of tourists and souvenir shops. Oh, and a bull ring. Right across from where we were camped. And, there was a bullfight that night. You know where this is going, don't you!! We stayed at the Piramide Inn which is owned by a lovely...

Oct 5, 2015 - Tulum

I started my next long (8+ months) trip on October 5, 2015 by flying to Cancun then catching a bus to Tulum. I spent time at the beach, swimming in the ocean, at some of the many nearby cenotes swimming and seeing turtles and bats, biking, and just walking through the small town of Tulum. The real touristy part is the ruins, which I atually didn't even visit. At one of the cenotes if you stand still then the fish come and nibble the dead skin off your feet.

Cheryl's RTW: Mexico

Oct 5, 2015 - Mexico - Tulum

On Oct 5, I left again for an 8 month trip to Mexico, Central and South America. I started in Cancun, then took the bus down to Tulum. In Tulum I went to a few cenotes, spent time on the beach, and just enjoyed walking through the town. The ruins appear to be the tourist draw as it had a huge parking lot along with a Starbucks and other chains.
