May 20, 2009 - Puerto Escondido

Wifi is becoming less and less prevalent the further north we travel as is our opportunity to find food provisions. The grocery stores like Safeway have been left behind in La Paz and now we are trying to stay abreast with stores about a 1/4th the size of a small 7-11 with fresh produce (vegetables and fruit) being available only if you arrive within a day or two of their weekly delivery. We still have a lot to learn about proper provisioning. We left San Evaristo on Mother’s Day with a southerly wind enabling us to sail for about 22 nm. We...

Feb 16, 2009 - Loreto 2

Loreto, Baja california Sur, February 16, 2009 Spent a long day today, but a very interesting one. We hired a guide, Judy originally from Britain, who chose this area to live in. She has studied the history, the flora and fauna, and the people, so is really good. Sometimes a bit too enthusiastic, but just has to get in all the information! The Jesuits came to this area in the late 1700's to establish missions to the indians. They buit the mission here in Loreto (see our first stop here), and then decided to go up in to the mountains. They...

Feb 4, 2008 - Loreto – Super Bowl, Clambake and Internet

Mexico 1 climbed once again, whisking us away from the beautiful sand beaches of Bahia Concepcion. Looking back down the bay as we drove to Loreto, shades of blue and mountainous islands were visible for miles in the clear air. One after another of the famed bay beaches, photographed by many, passed below us as we climbed. On some beaches, only one RV could be seen on the lustrous white sand. The tourist trade has been down this year. These beaches are usually packed with snowbirds and caravans. Hills with interesting patterns kept my...

Feb 3, 2008 - Rancho Verde to Loreto

Today we traveled for about seven hours to Loreto. Tonight we are watching the Super Bowl...in Spanish...of course....so we don't always know what the deal is but get the main stuff. Anyhow, kind if fun! Tomorrow, Monday we will do some house cleaning, wash the truck and get the few things I saw when we came through before. Tuesday morning before we depart Dehlila and I will get our SPA DAY!

Jan 24, 2008 - San Ignacio to Loreto

The closest commercial airport to San Ignacio is Loreto which is about 250 km south. Loreto is not a major airport so there are limited flights available. The earliest flight that could be arranged leaves Tuesday January 29 with an overnight stop in Salt Lake City. The hotel we are in only has 28 rooms and is fully booked for tonight so we have little choice but to head to Loreto today. Fortunately, the hotel here found space for us at their sister hotel in Loreto so all we need to do is get ourselves to Loreto, then relax for the next 5...

Jan 22, 2008 - Loreto, BCS

Greetings from Loreto, The weather yesterday was beautiful. Today is warm enough, but overcast. Tomorrow is supposed to be some cooler, with a chance of showers. Until we arrived here, nights have been quite chilly. It is super seeing Baja with lots of green. Last time we were here, much was very dry and lacked color. We will walk into town tomorrow to have fish tacos at a favorite place. Our group started with 22 rigs. We are smallest, by far, and very happy with our choice. The large rigs have been having some problems. So far, one 5th...

Jan 15, 2008 - Mulege to Loreto

Our trip from Mulege to Loreto was short...about 90 miles. We arrived around 1pm and hit the town for fish tacos around 3pm. After lunch we saw the mission, which was built in 1697 and looked in stores and walked around till about 5pm. We found lots of cute things and also saw the hotel lobby that has a swimming pool bottom as the ceiling. Pretty cool! Dehlila and I also checked out the spa and set the return date for our "girls spa day"!

Dec 7, 2007 - On A Mission Near Loreto

Loreto is a bustling small city. As we arrived we soon realized that we had overshot the town. We back-tracked and found the convoluted route into our campground right near the city center. Our campground was small and cozy, but very well kept with ultra clean washrooms and showers, a convenient laundry set-up and wonderful neighbours. It was a short walk into the center of town where we visited some tourist gift shops, had an inexpensive and fabulous lunch at a tiny Taqueria. The next day I did an errands run on my bike, found a bike...

Our Adventure

Dec 5, 2007 - Baja Sur to Loreto

The rain that we experienced in Baja Norte would prove to be the last rain we would see for months! No more 'vados'. No more mud. Just dust and sand as the 'arroyos' (washes) dry up, the only signs of fresh water being at certain oasis' where one can see groves of tall palms. We continue south along Hwy 1 and enter the southern state of Baja California Sur (BCS) just before Guerrero Negro. It seems that we are starting to get into the Baja groove. The highway is still narrow with no shoulder. Very driveable but not a place for lazy or...

Nov 1, 2007 - Baja Part 1

Hey everybody! We're still alive, we're at a park in Loreto that has WIFI, so I was able to post this website update that I started on Thursday, November 1st. It's been five days since we crossed the border into Mexico. It's hard to believe it's almost been a week already...yet at the same time it feels in other ways like we've been with our new friends forever. Tonight we're parked at Santispac Beach. If you're trying to find us on a map, we're just south of Mulege, which is pronounced "Moo-le-hay", with the emphasis on the "Moo". We...

May 16, 2007 - Our trip North

Hi all. Just a short note to let you know where we are. We are currently in Puerto Escondido. We are here with our friends Pete and Marni on Two Pieces Of Eight. We had planned on taking a cab ti Loreto today, but as luck would have it we ran in to a friend on Frenchy whose friend has a car. Our friend Mike is going to take us, drop us off, and then go back and pick us up later. Another great fellow cruiser. This is such a nice tight knit community of REALLY great people. We left La Paz and went to Ensenada Grande on Isla Partida for two...
