Mar 3, 2014 - BBDO OMG

I’ve been here a month (which seems impossible; didn’t I just arrive?) and it’s been quite an emotional roller coaster, which I’m learning just seems to be part of my professional personality. Most of my radio silence is simply busier days with more to-do’s and wanting to fill my free time with as much fun as possible, but part of it is that I didn’t want to pollute my digital presence with negativity— especially since first impressions aren’t always fair or accurate ones. So I figured I’d give things time to fall into a more permanent...

Feb 4, 2014 - Home Is Where You Unpack Your Suitcase

My parting gift from Indonesia was an awesome conversation with the driver as we made our way from Lake Toba to Medan's aport, which was an absolutely hilarious five hours and truly treasured reminder of Indonesia’s best kind of people. As we discussed everything from his favorite movies (all the Fast and the Furious and anything with “muscle man Arnold the Governor”) to music (Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On and all Michael Jackson songs because “that music makes [my] body move from left to right”) to his children (who he referred to as...

Jan 28, 2014 - Kathmandu - KL

I spent half the night in with Caleb as he had a bad stomach again during the night. Poor kid felt unwell and just wanted to be home, I was with him on that one seeing as how long our trip would be. Finished off packing and tried to look at booking a night in a hotel in KL but that was all a bit of a drama in the end and no rooms available anyway, probably due to Chinese New Year. Headed off to the airport with plenty of time, not that Kathmandu airport is big or over security. Got something to eat while Kelvin watched New Zealand win at...

Jan 17, 2014 - Batu Caves, botanical gardens

Went via monorail and overland train to Batu Caves. Bit of a mistake as it's a special time for Hindu religion (Thaipusam). The trains....all of them, we're full to overflowing! Monorail 3MR & train to Batu Caves 4MR return. So standing like sardines, we eventually arrived at Batu Caves, fell out of the train and got 'pulled' along with everyone else. Gosh, it was horrendous! Stalls, people, rubbish, shoes smells..... Got into the queue and went up the steps with everyone else although they were mostly on a pilgrimage. And, how do they know...

Jan 16, 2014 - Petronas Towers, Chinatown, Central Market.....

We walked to the towers this morning. It took quite a while but was only just over a mile or so. From the towers we walked to Kampung Baru which us the village in the middle of KL. Disappointing really because there was nothing any different. Caught the train to Chinatown and walked through Petaling St. Normal market stuff but not as good as Bangkok. Stopped for a beer each at Swiss Cottage hotel in Petaling St (37.10MR, 16MR ea & 6% tax! & 10% service!). We walked through to India, Central Market (Art Deco) craft stalls and stores etc,...

Jan 15, 2014 - Arrived!

Arrived at the airport in the afternoon.....it's huge! Not well signposted so had to ask. We had to get a train to baggage claim and immigration but no problems or queues. Arrived at the taxi counter and waited in the queue for about 10 mins. Asked for a taxi to our hotel, Hotel Royal Kuala Lumpur. It'd changed its name so they weren't sure but after discussion, we were charged 102.10MR (ringgits) which is around £20. Arrived at the hotel an hour later and checked in. We have a 12th floor room. It's a bit dated but clean and spacious and...

Dec 23, 2013 - half way there

Up at 3am to leave at 3:25am. Got ride to airport from friend (thanks Izzy). No dramas leaving the country this time, thankfully. The flight was good but it was the roughest turbulence I had been in, but only for a short period of time. I won't need any roller coasters tomorrow after that. Only a couple of hours left here then we are back on plane to today's final destination, Hong Kong. Boys want to go check out lollie shop and no doubt buy some, so more later.

Oct 10, 2013 - Malaysia Kuala Lumpa

We decided to fligh from Thailand to Malaysia as it was the cheapest and quickest option, it was the quickest flight ever! Literally took 1 hour 15 I didn't even have a chance to finnish the movie I watched 'life of Pi' such a classic! We even got a complementary flight meal in that time...such good airways...you'd never get that with easy jet lol So malaysia is one hot country....one was very sticky when we got to Chinatown to find our pre booked hotel...expensive ill add! So we dropped our bags and went looking for a cheaper hotel for the...

Jun 14, 2013 - Paris to Kuala Lumpur

So far, so good. It was a very long wait for my flight from Paris but it took off on time & although it wasn’t an A380, the seats were very comfortable. I slept reasonably well – only watched one movie ‘Hyde Park on the Hudson’ about FDR & his complicated private life. I’ve just had a shower in the Malaysia Airlines lounge & am ready to do some Duty Free shopping. I’ve got another long stopover here but there’s plenty to do & the lounge is very comfortable. It’s really OK to have a break between long flights so I don’t mind.

Shirley's 2013 Trip

Jun 9, 2013 - Day 22 last day Kuala Lumpur,then home

The end of a holiday has to come, but it always comes too quickly. We are fuming, Malaysian Airline told us we had only 1 seat booked! Thus I'm in row 11 & Michael's in row 40!!! And I saw the booked seats at the travel agents! Heads are going to roll. This is the 2nd time this trip that this has happened. After these incidents & the lousy food in flight,& Michael was complaining about the service on board , I don't think we'll be flying with Malaysian Airlines again. Mind you, we could've just bad flight (s). But we had a great holiday &...

Jun 8, 2013 - Day 21

This morning we went down to Little India & poked around it's temples & markets. )n our way to Central Market we decided to pop into a local Maccas for a coffee, nice & hot, very hot-this can be hard to get here. From here we went to the Botanical Gardens where there's a Butterfly Park,Bird Park, & an Orchid Park.It was a bit of a walk but worth it.By now our legs were a tad sore & we both felt we could do with a rest.So back to hotel for a short bit of R&R. Tonight we went to the night market in Chinatown, where it was jam packed with people...

Jun 7, 2013 - Day 20

Chinatown today. One thing Michael's noticed is that the mono-train fares change depending on the time of day that you are travelling.I think this might coincide with their peak hour travel. And in these times, the doors just close when a guard signals that the train is full, even as people are getting on the train. Don't get caught in the closing doors, they stop for no-one. I think we were a little early in visiting Chinatown this morning, many businesses were either closed or in the process of opening. To start with,we followed a tour map...
