May 12, 2006 - Merang to Kuala Terengganu

A very casual ride (62km), stopping and enjoying interesting Malaysian food. Myles tried some young coconut juice (it was ok), and otak-otak (a fish, coconut and spice mixture wrapped in banana leaves and roasted over charcoal fire - very tasty, kinda sweet). Then we stopped again for some keropok. We watched a few women roll long and thin dough of gray colour (a fish and fruit mixture) and throw it into boiling water - a large pool (1m x 1.5m) heated by wood fire. Dipped in a sweet chili sauce it tasted delicious - we were too full at the...

May 11, 2006 - Kuala Besut to Merang

Cycled 91km from Kuala Besut to Merang. Left late, and arrived at dusk. Stayed at the Kembara Resort - very dirty, but we were too tired to care. We went to bed determined to leave the next morning. The beach looked beautiful at night in the light of the almost full moon.

May 9, 2006 - Perhentian Islands

Ahh! We think we truly have found paradise, at last! Our island exploration brought us here to the Perhentian Islands of Malaysia. Reaching paradise was somewhat tough, involving a ferry, 2 mini-bus rides, and a long taxi ride. Having barely eaten anything on our journey (buses in Thailand only stop for 5 minutes at a time for you to use the restroom and nothing else), we barely made it across the Malaysian border just seconds before it closed and found ourselves stuck at the border in the middle of the night with no other option than to...

May 8, 2006 - Pulau Perhentian Kecil - D'Lagoon

Getting a cake onto an island that's nowhere near a bakery was quite the feat. But, it happened, and it came with 4 candles one for every decade. Not that I am 40 just yet, only 39. Our last night at D'Lagoon we talked them into making us an authentic Malaysian dinner. It was very tasty. The regular menu consisted of many North American dishes, including 5 different varieties of macaroni n'cheese.

May 8, 2006 - Perhentian Island, Malaysia - Beach Paradise

Perhentian Islands - Beach Paradise For three years now I have heard so much about the elusive Perhentian Islands. The perfect white sand beaches sparkling in the sun. Shades of blue and turquoise water so clear it is like looking through glass to the sandy bottom below. Palm trees arching across nearly empty beaches. Finally, I have now seen it for myself and can say, all the hype is true. Eric being the world traveller that he is discovered Perhentian Islands about twelve years ago while in Malaysia. This was before the age of digital...

May 6, 2006 - Pulau Perhentian Kecil - D'Lagoon

Pulau Perhentian Kecil, an island off the east coast of peninsular Malaysia (South China Sea) is quite the paradise. A lot cleaner than any of the beaches we've seen in Thailand. D'Lagoon is a relatively undeveloped beach, and it is a family owned business - the owner assured us that it would remain that way. He is leasing the land, and he takes great care to keep the area clean, and to minimize impact on the environment. There are several beaches within easy walking distance where you can spend the entire day without seeing a single...

May 5, 2006 - Kota Bharu - Kuala Besut

On the road again. We cycled from Kota Bharu to Kuala Besut. Our map lacked in detail. We had to stop to ask directions several times. People were very friendly, but the directions we got added quite a few kms to our journey. When we asked how far we had to go we got many different answers - 25km, 60km, 15km, 6km ... We made it eventually. Got on a fast speed boat in Kuala Besut and arrived at D'Lagoon on Pulau Perhentian Kecil late afternoon.

Mar 16, 2006 - Mark - The Cameroon Highlands and the Perhentian Islands

Mark - So I eventually made it to the Cameroon Highlands five days later than planned due to my passport stolen. Unfortunately it rained constantly when I was there, for some reason ( I can't think why) the attraction of going on a hike through the jungle lost its appeal. Typically, talking to the owner of the guesthouse I stayed at I found out that the weather was "sunny and nice" five days earlier when I was originally meant to there. With such poor weather all I could do was have a few beers and eat curry (there is a large Indian...

Sep 15, 2005 - Beach lounging Chpt 3

Once again, our travels have found us landed on a beautiful beach. We've spent the last 3 days unwinding from the hustle and flow of KL. So where are we this time? The island group known as the Perhentians. We stayed on the smaller of the pair, Kecil, on Long Beach. The places are like little bungalows with a fan and once again our trusty mozzy net. Yet again: Not Romantic! This time we had a little frog living in our bathroom. Each destination seems to have different resident creatures, whose vocal sounds we become very familiar with....

Aug 22, 2005 - News from Paradise

Hello everyone Sorry for the delay have had trouble finding the internet, won't be able to reply emails as very expensive so here is the update. Arrived here I think Sat afternoon, cant really remember as have lost track of time. We took a mini bus from Cameron Highlands to the coast where we were told a ferry would take us over to the Island...it wasn't a ferry in the slightest just a little random wooden boat, was pretty cool though. Arrived on the island, had to wade throught the water with our bags to actually get on the beach. We're...

Aug 22, 2005 - Malaysia - Perhentian Islands

Hello people! We are officially in paradise. We've been in the Perhentian Islands for few days now but is hard to get on internet. They are 2 small islands off the east cost of Malaysia and they are amazing. We're staying on the smaller island in Long Beach and literally all that is here is a beach. It took about 45 mins by small boat to reach here and there is nothing here except a few guest houses (in the form of huts) a few bars and 2 shops (there is no road or town, just this beach). We're staying in a little hut literally on the beach...
