Feb 25, 2007 - Back in time to the Perhenthian Islands

I probably would have appreciated the Perhenthian islands much more if I hadn't spent so much time island hopping in Thailand. It looks like every other island, but is still quite different than any I've been on before. Having no vehicles its quite peacefull, but after Kota Bharu I was dissapointed with the food. Of course everything was really expensive becasue the island was for tourists, but was I didn't like was that I couldn't find any of that really amazing local food that I had just come to love. Where do the locals eat anyways? I...

May 9, 2006 - Perhentian Islands

Ahh! We think we truly have found paradise, at last! Our island exploration brought us here to the Perhentian Islands of Malaysia. Reaching paradise was somewhat tough, involving a ferry, 2 mini-bus rides, and a long taxi ride. Having barely eaten anything on our journey (buses in Thailand only stop for 5 minutes at a time for you to use the restroom and nothing else), we barely made it across the Malaysian border just seconds before it closed and found ourselves stuck at the border in the middle of the night with no other option than to...

Mar 16, 2006 - Mark - The Cameroon Highlands and the Perhentian Islands

Mark - So I eventually made it to the Cameroon Highlands five days later than planned due to my passport stolen. Unfortunately it rained constantly when I was there, for some reason ( I can't think why) the attraction of going on a hike through the jungle lost its appeal. Typically, talking to the owner of the guesthouse I stayed at I found out that the weather was "sunny and nice" five days earlier when I was originally meant to there. With such poor weather all I could do was have a few beers and eat curry (there is a large Indian...

Aug 22, 2005 - Malaysia - Perhentian Islands

Hello people! We are officially in paradise. We've been in the Perhentian Islands for few days now but is hard to get on internet. They are 2 small islands off the east cost of Malaysia and they are amazing. We're staying on the smaller island in Long Beach and literally all that is here is a beach. It took about 45 mins by small boat to reach here and there is nothing here except a few guest houses (in the form of huts) a few bars and 2 shops (there is no road or town, just this beach). We're staying in a little hut literally on the beach...

Aug 7, 2005 - Leaving Kuala Lumpur to go North

This morning Clair left to get the bus to Thailand and me and Vicky went on a mission to sort some things out, I got a new SIM card for my mobile and the number is at the top of my home page with the others, and also booked out bus ticket to travel over night north and then we will catch a boat across to Pulau Perhentian, these are two island off the north east coast on the Malaysian peninsular. Dr Kate my Canadian friend said they were fab and you can dive for $25 and she did her PADI's there so I know it will be ok. We also went and...

Jul 9, 2005 - Malaysia - Pulau Perhentian Kecil & Besar

Selamat pagi! People of the world, we've found it! There's a paradise on Earth and it is in the Perhentian Islands. We had to take several buses from Taman Negara and spend one night in Kuala Terengganu, but we finally reached Pulau Perhentian Kecil and it was so much worth the hassle. Our first day was gone doing pretty much nothing other than resting, recovering from Taman Negara and handwashing our stinky clothes, but the following days were awesome. The Perhentian Islands are two islands: one big (Besar) and one small (Kecil). We stayed...

Jun 30, 2005 - Perhentian Islands

Beautiful little islands off the coast of Malaysia. Unfortunatly i've had a wicked cold since i got here (no it's not Malaria!) so haven't been able to scuba dive. Just wandered the beaches, swam in the 23 degree water and drank at the hostel beach bar. Also managed to catch the British Lions test.......Rubbish!

May 25, 2005 - Peherentian Islands

Back to the beach and the stomach problems an island can bring along. Dammit. Anyway, the Peherentians are beautiful islands and I had a fantastic time here, snorkeling as usual, sunbathing, relaxing, feeding the kittens hitten in the cleaning ladies shelter etc. Celebrated my BIRTHDAY on the 2nd, not with the normal Danish strawberry birthday cake, but with a big banana split literally set on fire.... He he he. Thanks guys for a nice birthday. I'll look into NZ.

May 23, 2005 - Perhentian Islands

After a very long journey which consisted of an nightboat, two minibuses, a night stopover over at the harbour, then speedboat, we arrived in the Perhentian Islands. As we arrived we were greated my crystal clear watersea and golden sand. We found a lovely bunglow, which had beautiful views of the beach! The islands remain very untouch by tourists, with only one hotel, and small bunglows, and the only shop a small minimart. The main attraction is snorkelling, and we went on an amazing snorkelling trip around the islands. We saw beatuiful...

May 8, 2005 - Perhenthian Islands

It had been a few weeks since we were last on the beach and we were beginning to get withdrawal symptoms. A "quick" hop across to the Perhenthian Islands was what we wanted and literally what we got. We opted for the "fast boat" which on a choppy sea was like a ride at Alton Towers, crashing over every wave, tumbling down with spine-shattering cracks! We arrived without permanent spinal injury... just. It was really undeveloped, so much in fact that we couldn't find a room for our first night, ending up instead in a small tent on the beach....

May 3, 2005 - Perhentian Islands

Hello! Sorry its been a while! I'm having to write about the Pehrentians from KL as there wasn't really any net access on the islands. I took a night bus from Penang to Kota Bahru city on east coast of Malaysia and went straight to the 'Ideal House' hostel, a lady in Penang recommended me. I got myself a ferry ticket and took a taxi to the harbour at 9am. The Pehrentians are really cool - made up of two main islands - Besar (the big, quiet one) and Kecil which is where all the backpackers go. Most of the accomodation comprises of a-frame...
