Mar 18, 2017 - A leech on your stomach?

We were up quite early after our second night at Poring Hot Springs. Today we had the longest journey of our tour – a 5hour drive from the poring hot springs to a little place called Kampung Bilit on the Kinabatangan River where we were going to spent a night in a jungle lodge. After probably our worst meal of the tour so far – breakfast in one of the local cafes which was pretty nasty but not the end of the world, we set off. The drive itself was pretty uneventful, the driving is noticeably calmer and safer than the other countries I’ve...

Oct 11, 2016 - Making more memories and the inhumanity of mankind...

So our final day of this trip and another which has been full of laughter, adventure and other good things. We started early again with breakfast at 7am before heading back onto the boat to speed downstream and back to Sandakan. It's interesting how you can almost become blasé about some things, and another sighting of Macaque monkeys didn't really fire the enthusiasm - maybe another week without much sleep is starting to catch up with me. It's not just the early starts but the humidity really can be unpleasant and keep you awake at night...

Dave in Borneo 2016

Mar 11, 2012 - Turtle Island

11th March Now back in delightful Sandikan (!) having spent yesterday on Turtle Island which was fantastic. We left for the 40km boat trip in poring rain and it was still raining when we got to an idyllic white sand beach. Not to be deterred I said that we should go swimming before lunch as we would get wet anyway. Into the nice warm sea we went and were just going back to get changed before lunch. 'where's the key Dave'? 'ah it was in my pocket' he sheepishly replies. Of course it isn't now so we go back to reception and they don't have...

Mar 9, 2012 - More Jungle tales

9th March Had a really amazing day yesterday when we visited the Orang utans at Sepilok. We were a bit sceptical at first and nearly didn't come because we didn't want to see them in a zoo like situation again. The ones here have the choice to come in for feeding time or not and we have heard reports of people perhaps seeing a mum and baby but not much else. We were really thrilled then to see 7 including 2 babies which was fabulous. They were a joy to watch and it was interesting to see how they interacted with one another. At one point a...

Mar 7, 2012 - In the jungle

5th March Wow what a day. Woke up tis morning and decided to try to get on a jungle adventure trip as Sandakan didn't look as place where you wanted to spend very much time. We rang the office at 8.30 and yes there were places and we could be picked up at 11.30. So here we are at Nature Lodge Kinabatangan where its all go. Checking in then whisk off on the river cruise where we were amazed to see wild Orang-utan and Pygmy elephants amongst the usual fare of crocodile, Probiscus monkeys and Mackcacks. How amazing is that?? The Orang-utan...

Mar 4, 2012 - Borneo

20th February Yesterday we hired yet another motorbike ( I have even truly frustrated by the lack of push bikes!) and went along the coast to the next bay. The thing is this is a beutiful coast line but there is absolutely no planning so it's getting spoilt in the same way as Spain with huge condo blocks springing up everywhere. They seem to be aimed at the Russian/European market but are not cheap, around £350000 for a beach side apartment. We did find a nice patch of sand though and enjoyed being with the local families who were all...

Dec 18, 2011 - Borneo - Day 14 & 15 - 2 Night Jungle Adventure, Kinabatangan River

Dec. 17th: Departed KK at 10:30am on a bound bus for Suka. Bus ride turned out to be a bit rough for me as two of the passengers seated behind us began throwing up. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a sympathetic vomitor, if I see it/smell it or hear it I'm pretty much done for the day. It was really hard for me not to join in but SUCCESS - I manage to survive. Arrived at the Suka junction drop-off point a little just before 5pm. Two vehicles just "happened" to be parked waiting for new arrivals to take into the town of Suka. We jumped...

Jan 17, 2011 - Sandakan

Arrived 17th January Departed 19th January Sandakan is a pretty rubbish city/town. The first lady I spoke to told me, without any sort of prompting or question, how I would be much safer in Kota Kinabalu – that made me feel good! I used it as a stopover before my trip out to turtle island! Boat ride was pretty rough but turtle island was awesome! We pretty much spent the day relaxing on the beach but were fortunate enough to see a random hatching of a nest of turtles. A few of our group were just taking a walk along the beach when they...

Flip flop's tour

Oct 17, 2010 - Borneo

Arrived in Borneo (Malaysia Borneo Sabah) on the 17th of October and stayed until the 31st. Mixed bag really in Borneo. The Capital of Sabah Kota Kinabalu was a bit run down, nothing really to do there. We got a 6 hour bus to Sandakan (inland Borneo). This used to be an old colonial town. Sandakan however was a camp for the POWs during world war two so the place was completely destroyed! There was one house that did remain Agnes Keith House (writer of the book "The land below the wind") Here they opened a restaurantwhere we ate scones and...

Jun 26, 2010 - Pt 4... Orangutans

We left Turtle Island early in the morning and after breakfast headed to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre for feeding time. After a video show which explained about the work of the centre - they rescue orphaned baby orangytans and bring them to the centre to take care of them until they can do it themselves. At 10am the Rangers got out the bananas and 3 o/tans came and started eating. It was soooo cute watching them cuddle up to each other and playing. We only got 3 as it's fruit season so they don't need to rely on the rangers...

Jun 24, 2010 - Pt 2 - River Cruises

This morning we left the lodge at 8 to drive to the river... all along the way we were surrounded by thousands (in reality the total number probably reached to over a million - and i'm not exagerating) of Palm Oil trees which is the main export from Borneo. Interesting for the first half an hour but a bit boring for the next three and a half! Akim left me at the Riverside Lodge where I was to spend the night and go on a boat tour to find Probisicous Monkeys - which we did, in abundance. There were so many monkeys along the river! As well as...

Jun 12, 2010 - Borneo - Semporna / Sandakan / Kinabatanga River
