Jun 1, 2005 - Kota Kinabalu

Singapore had introduced us very nicely to Asia but it was time to move onto to a wilder place and that place is Borneo! We took a flight from Johar Bahru (JB) just over the border into Malaysia to Kota Kinabalu (KK). They like their abbreviations here. It wasn't quite what we were expecting in that it's a modern small city with kfc's on every corner. However it does posses an energy and character that is quite different from Singapore. We checked into Lucy's Homestay Backpackers to meet up with our friend Lou who was staying there while...

Back to KK. We wanted to go and see the National Mosque. After asking around for thé mosque for quite a while, not getting any real response, just confused faces, we realized how stupid we were.... Try to go to Copenhagen and ask for "thé church" and I'm sure everyone would stare at you as you were a lunatic as well. We found it eventually after realizing out stupidity.

Apr 20, 2005 - Arrive in Kota Kintabalu, Borneo

Finally in Borneo, well one small part of it anyhow. Its always been a dream just to set foot in Borneo and I'm only here for a short time so better make the most of it. Got picked up and taken to my hostel. The Beach Lodge wasn't exactly what I expected. Up through three floors of pee stenching staircases. Mmh nice start! The hostel was pretty basic which was ok, but there were only a few backpackers and a couple of locals. Had a sleep straight away as was so tired after not really sleeping the night before! So hot here, but at least...

Flying to Borneo Malaysia .......Back to a beach and some nice islands............ Because of the holiday in Sapa at the moment, it is difficult to visit any of the usual tourist attractions, since everything is booked out. I'll make reservations for later, leave for the southern part of Saba, and come back later.

Valerie in Asia

Feb 15, 2005 - Kota Kinabalu

Jan 22, 2005 - Brilliant Borneo - Part 1

Just when were beginning to think that we had perhaps spent too much time in South East Asia, we stumbled into Borneo... Well, that's not strictly true. We don't regret any of our time here, we are just a bit annoyed with ourselves for choosing such a well worn path, which has at times been frustrating. And we didn't stumble into Borneo, we flew. With Air Asia, Asia's answer to Easyjet, for the princely sum of 45 pounds. So here we are, in Sabah, the Northernmost region of Malaysian Borneo, and so far, we are loving (almost) every...

Dec 28, 2004 - Kota Kinabalu

We hitched a lift to Kota Kinabalu and just managed to walk up the stairs to our room at the aptly named Trekkers Lodge. We've never ached so much in all our lives and we still need help getting onto the pavement from the road! The devastating news of the tsunamis reached us on Boxing Day. We're both fine and as far as we know all our friends travelling in the area are OK too. We are so lucky to have been on this side of Malaysia. We are still going to Bangkok on 29th December as planned.

Our Big Adventure

Nov 30, 2004 - KINARUT

For us, it was an early boat ride back to Sandakan to catch our flighht back to Kota Kinabalu - the part of the trip that I had been dreading the most! Now it's no secret that I hate flying at the best of times so a flight on a Fokker50 Turbopropellor was never going to be a welcome journey. Still, I had no choice and it was only 50 minutes!? The plane was actually bigger than I had expected but our group had all been split up so I was sitting on my own. However, everyone knew that I was scared of flying and after taking one look at my...

Nov 19, 2004 - Kota Kinabalu - Sabah

Well I made it to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, after a long, emotional day. What can I say? I just don't like flying and the turbulence was horrible. Just spent the whole day close to tears, especially when I realised that I've still got 11 flights to go! Also think that I saw one of the turbopropellor planes that I have to go on next week - oh my gog, its tres small!! Cheered myself up in the afternoon by checking out the local mall - they even have special McFlurrie booths dotted aroun, mmnnn..... Spent a quiet night with a bar of chocolate,...

Nov 14, 2004 - Selamat Hari Raya!! (Happy Eid, in Malai)

That's right, the end of Ramadan is being celebrated all over Malaysia, and being in Borneo on the Malaysian side, we are right smack dab in the middle of the festivities. But I am jumping the gun a little...let me tell you first how Yehia and Meghan met up in Asia and arrived on the beautiful island of Borneo. Yehia arrived late in the night to Bangkok and met up with Meghan in a designated hostel, in the touristy part of the city, Khao San Road. The next day we took a public transport boat down the river to visit the grand palace as well...
