Feb 5, 2006 - Borneo Kota Kinabalu to Sepilok

Ok so we ended up after That Bangkok lunch in Borneo instead of Burma. Close enough. We chose the Borneo part of Malaysia because : - There was a cheap Air asia flight - The rain season was supposed to be over there (fat lie that) - Kota Kinabalu is a funny name (well we are no longer that used to white wine and there was plenty flowing at that lunch) - You are like 99.5% sure to see Orang Outan (who only live in Borneo and Sumatra)at the Sepilok rehabilitation centre (one should never underestimate de nasty strenght of the 0.5%) - Sipadan...

Jan 24, 2006 - The first week at Raleigh in Borneo!

So i've been in Borneo now for about 10 days ....for those who don't know I'm doing Logistics for the charity Raleigh International (www.raleighinternational.org). I'm living in a house/office in Kota Kinabalu- the capital of Sabah in East Malaysia. Theres about 25 staff living in the house but once all the projects start it will be down to 6 or 7. I'm responsible for making sure all the projects have food and equipment to be able to run.....some of them are very remote! I get to drive a big landrover around KK which is fun- especially...

Dec 7, 2005 - Nov. 26- Dec 7, Sabah- Malaysia (Sungai Kinabatangan, Semporna, Kota Kinabalu)

We packed a lot into our last week and a half in Borneo. The entire time was spent in Sabah, the northwest part of Borneo. Somewhat different from Sarawak, Sabah has a large Indonesian and Pilipino population with strong Islamic traditions. Like Sarawak, we thoroughly enjoyed the people of Sabah. We started at Sepilock Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, which is similar to the Orangutan Center in Sarawak, but larger. Once again we were amazed by these creatures and loved watching them. Orangutan, "man of the jungle", is the only species of...

Nov 11, 2005 - Malaysia Borneo - Shangri La's Rosa Ria resort

As a short holiday treat to ourselves we booked (at a highly discounted internet rate) a three night stay at the luxury resort of Shangri-la Rasa Ria, about 20km from KK. It's set on the bay with swimming pools, restaurants and bars, a fitness suite, SPA and a golf club. The grounds also include a slab of hilltop jungle where their group of orang utans whose home is the reserve are free to roam and play. It wasn't quite the relaxing break we had hoped for as the weather wasn't on our side and attempts at sunbathing usually resulted in a...

Oct 26, 2005 - Malaysia Borneo - Kota Kinabalu

The flight over to KK ws very snooth and because we had prebooked our accommodation they came to pick us up from the airport. Just as well really as it was pretty manic and seemed as though we'd have been there all night otherwise. The next day we had to try and organise what and how we would be doing everything we wanted to in Sabah. We only went for some info at a dive agency but the woman was a great sales person and they had some good deals on offer, so we ended up booking a 4D/3N dive trip to Sipadan Island that started at 4am the next...

Sep 27, 2005 - Kota Kinabalu - Borneo

Antarctica, Patagonia, Attacama, Macchu Pichu, Easter Island, Tahiti, Tibet, all places I've dreamed of visiting and made it to on this trip and now I can add Borneo to the list (and I've been here for nearly a day and it hasn't rained yet!) I'm spoilt for choice of what to do here too, should I dive first or climb Kinabalu or maybe do a jungle trip, how about a visit to the Orangutangs or Probiscus Monkeys? One things for sure, Snake Island isn't on my itinerary. Kota Kinabalu is actually a lot more Malaysian than I expected and could...

Sep 5, 2005 - Bangkok & Borneo

Sa ankom vi endelig to the far east.

Aug 21, 2005 - Kota Kinabalu

We did not really get up to much when we were in KK, we basically rested explored a little and fed oursleves up. It was a nice place, and we had though about going to the Island just of KKm but the weather was a bit varied and so decided against it. We treated ourselves to a nice Italian at Little Italy, which was nice and well deserved we thought for climbing the mountain.

Aug 11, 2005 - Kota Kinabalu (Malaysian Borneo)

Arrived at 19:40 on the flight from KL, got a cab into downtown, and had some real trouble trying to find a room, had to check out loads of places, they were either really expensive, grotty or fully booked. Managed to find quite a decent place for a reasonable amount in the end, and best of all an amazingly hot and powerful shower and a lovely mattress. We had been waiting a week for such comforts. Today we have spent our time looking around Kota kinabalu or KK, have managed to sort out our accommodation to climb Mt Kinnabalu for next...

Aug 5, 2005 - Sabah!

So we made it to Borneo! Its beatiful here. We met our friends Mandi and Sarah yesterday and went to the Island of Sapi right off the coast here in Kota Kinabalu(KK). It was really pretty did some snorkling hiking. We only wore sandals so we scraped up our legs pretty good, but not too much worse than what we'd been doing on the beaches in the Philipines. Said goodbye to our friends today, who are headed off to Kuala Lumpur. We are going white water rafting tomorrow so we will write more in a day or two. - Johnny

Jul 7, 2005 - Recovering in Kota Kinabalu

Shockingly, I wasn't that sore today. OK, I was sore, but I wasn't pre-season field hockey sore, which is the standard by which I measure all soreness. I was, however, totally wiped out and very content to spend the afternoon wandering around Azi's hometown eating everything in sight!

Jun 30, 2005 - Heading to Borneo!

I woke up yesterday and found that Azi is still sick, so I hopped on the train to the airport and catch a flight to Borneo, specifically to Kota Kinabalu in the state of Sabah. I got to Borneo and figured I'd go all the way east and then work my way back to KK. (I probably could have flown directly to the east coast if I'd thought it out a bit, but that would have been too easy.) Basically, I've spent the last 2 days organizing tours and in transit, so there's not much to report. However, I feel the need to mention briefly the hotel I found...
