Aug 7, 2009 - Second Day in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah’s Capital City

Today we stayed in KK, as we could only pick up our Indonesian visa from the Indonesian consulate after 4 this afternoon. Finally, with our Indonesian visas in hand, we eventually made our way to KK’s equivalent of San Francisco's’s Fisherman's Wharf, the Waterfront Esplanade. This portion of KK’s waterfront, obviously built with the tourist demographic in mind, is lined with higher end stores for tourists selling handicrafts, restaurants, bars and cafes. A series of outdoor restaurants and bars are situated on a boardwalk here maybe 200...

Break From the Law

Aug 6, 2009 - First Day in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah’s Capital City

KK is, as we saw while wandering around the city today, quite a developed place. Anyone coming to Sabah expecting to find KK to be some gritty third world city in the jungle out of an Indiana Jones movie will need to look elsewhere. Burger King, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Starbucks and a number of other international chains are well represented here. There are upscale outdoor areas along the waterfront and out on a renovated pier with a number of restaurants, cafes, gelato parlors and schi schi bars serving expensive cocktails and mixed drinks....

Break From the Law

Aug 5, 2009 - Licked by a Lizard

Today we took a boat to Sapi, an island off KK in the Tunku Marine park. Since we arrived in Borneo we have wanted to see monitor lizards but so far had seen none. We heard this island had them. Shortly after we arrived on the island we noticed a group of people at the back of the beach where the forest started. We went over and finally, we saw our monitor lizards! They're huge - kind of crocodile-looking with a forked tongue. A restaurant on the island was grilling in the back and one of the guys came over and offered us some bones to feed...

Aug 5, 2009 - The Long Bus Ride

So you would think after as many long distance, overnight bus rides as we have under our belts we would remember to dress warmer. Two coats between 4 people isn't the most comfortable going through the mountains at night. Then early in the trip our bus stopped to pick up passengers from another bus that had broken down so we had people sleeping in the aisles for an 11 hour bus ride that was supposed to be 9 hours! But we made it to Kota Kinabalu (KK) finally and we are thoroughly enjoying this fun seaside capital city of Sabah, Borneo. Our...

May 3, 2009 - Singapore

Hi All, Well here we are in Singapore awaiting our flight to Koh Samui- Thailand. We had a great day/eve yesterday in Kota Kinabalu. We went to an Orang-utang santuary. What a cool experience. There were two cute little babies (3yrs). We took a lot of pics and videos too. No where to download them right now. Will put on the site when we get to Samui. Had a nice evening out with our new friends Michelle and Noel from Perth Australia. We are really looking forward to our Thailand stay. It's almost like coming home. Will write more later. Off...

Apr 30, 2009 - What's going on in Borneo?

Hi All, Well, it's Friday May 1st and this is our first entry. Internet cafes are not as abundant as Thailand or even Cambodia for that matter. There are two computers here at our hotel, but hard to get access. So I will bring you all up to date: Traveling here was quite uneventful. We had a longer stopover in Hong Kong than expected. We were there about 8 hours. The airline put us up at the airport hotel...it was really nice. Actually the nice thing was to get some sleep( a few hours). The entire trip took us about 17 hours. It was a long...

Apr 28, 2009 - Mulu - Mt. Kinabalu

I arrived back in KK and jumped on a flight to Gunung Mulu National Park. My time in Mulu was limited so i immediately planned out all of my activities for while i was there. First up was some adventure caving in Racer cave. Adventure caving is when you strap on a helmet, a head lamp and head into a cave prepared to get dirty. Se spent two and a half hours trekking about a kilometer into the cave and back. In order to get from one end of the cave to the other we had to scale rocks and climb up and down ropes. We got extremely dirty and it...

Apr 23, 2009 - Pulau Sipadan

My first day of diving was at Pulau Mabul. Mabul is an island located about 30 kn away from Semporna and is surrounded by a coral reef that is well known for its muck diving and viewing macro (small) sea life. Mabul was by far the best diving i have experienced since i started diving. There was an abundance of life that i have never seen before. The more i dive, the more i get better at controlling myself under water and holding myself steady in one spot. This is crucial for viewing small sea life as it allows you to get within inches of...

Mar 22, 2009 - Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah and the most cosmopolitan city in Malaysian Borneo, although to be honest there's not much to do here. We spent a day here wandering around the city cantre, and I have to say that considering where we are I was surprised at the amount of night life here.

Where's Malcolm?

Feb 19, 2009 - Kota Kinabalu

After NO sleep what so ever due to a snoring China man in my dorm, I left Sandakan yesterday morning in a foul mood and caught a bus 7hrs over to the western side of Borneo to Kota Kinabalu. I booked into a backpacker's called Summer Lodge on someones recommendation, who shall remain nameless, and discovered to my dismay that I had basically paid to sleep in a concrete coffin. A windowless room the size of a laundry, containing 2 bunk beds and a fold out. Fortunately there was only one other person staying in that room, if it was full I...

Taking the Long Way

Feb 11, 2009 - Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Next stop after Kuala Lumpor was Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. I realised that this will be our 4th flight in 10 days, and who knows how many miles we have travelled! I think this thought made us quite tired, so we both slept soundly on the plane... Josh a little longer than me, obviously! Upon touching down in Kota Kinabalu, we decided to once again recharge our batteries by getting a meal at a Western fast food joint, this time, KFC! The KFC here is just fantastic, the chicken pieces are HUGE and fresh, the burgers delicious...

Nov 26, 2008 - Vacation to the Island of Borneo

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We have just returned from our trip to the Island of Borneo, which is the third largest island in the world and home to East Malaysia, parts of Indonesia and the small country of Brunei. We stayed in East Malaysia in the city of Kota Kinabalu, the capital of the state of Sabah. (I updated the map on the homepage if you want a better look at where we went). We were there for a conference Maggie had for work, but also stayed some extra days for vacation. The hotel we stayed at was great with beautiful views of the...
