Jul 13, 2010 - Sepilok Rehab Center for Man of the Forrest

Our next stop on the way to diving is to stop by Sandakan and visit the Orang-utang Rehabilitation Center. We arrived in Sandakan in the early afternoon from our mountain adventure. Sandakan was a nice place on the waterfront to be for a day and a half. The next day we hopped a local bus to the Rehabilitation Center which was a 45 minute bus ride from Sandakan. At the center, there are 2 feedings a day once in the morning and once in the afternoon when the orang utang can be observed. We saw three during the morning feeding. I was not...

Jul 7, 2010 - Mt. Kinabalu

We left KK for the 2 hour drive to the base of Mt. Kinabalu to finalize our arrangements and take a several hour jungle hike. We were hiking on the Liwgan Trail by 1400. It was very lush and green. We really enjoyed the hike especially because we saw only one small group of hikers the whole afternoon. Just short of breaking out we got caught in a rain storm. The cool rain was refreshing and I have been enjoying the cool temperatures. The base of the national park is at roughly 5,500 feet. The summit is at 13,400ft and is the highest point...

Jul 7, 2010 - Checking out Kota Kinabalu

We arrived around noon in Kota Kinabalu (KK) the largest Malaysian city on the northern part of Borneo. We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring around town. The Lonely Planet says KK has the largest outdoor street market in Southeast Asia. So that was definitely on our plan to check out the night market down on the Jetty. About 2 hours after we arrive we experience our first tropical downpour. Even though this is considered the dry season it still rains in the afternoons. We wandered around the area for the remainder of the afternoon...

May 19, 2010 - Kota Kinabalu

Apr 24, 2010 - Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu (KK) Tuesday Early wake up and checked out of Hyatt Regency Kuantan. Passed 2 Malaysia Airlines staff at reception, who turned out to be our air stewards. Managed to doze off for a while on the flight, to be woken by the steward as meals were being served. Meal was good, flight was uneventful, and only managed to watch 30 minutes of the dvd (Max Payne) during the flight. Arrived at the new Kota Kinabalu International airport - nice new efficient airport, where we had to go through customs to enter the Malaysian state of Sabah…...

Mar 31, 2010 - Kota Kinabalu, Borneo

A quick flight took us to KK, another bustling, modern city of 270,000 people. Built along the seaside and famous for seafood and sunsets (and apparently, shopping, given it's many, multi-storied shopping malls). We are beginning to see a pattern for modern, Asian cities that rely heavily on covered, air-conditioned malls to encourage people to venture out during the midday heat. While here, we visited the Sabah Museum (interesting exhibits on indigenous cultures and arts) and the State Mosque (modern, but beautiful). We had to cover up...

Mar 3, 2010 - Rounding Cape York

Tuesday 2nd March – Day 52 We were woken this morning with a superb red sky, I jumped out of bed grabbed my camera and shot outside only to be met by a very humid atmosphere which immediately fogged up the lens on the camera, so I shot back in to get the cleaning cloth but it took ages to dry out the optics before I could get a decent photo by which time I had lost the best image; oh well we will have to be more alert in these hot humid areas. Well we are now at sea sailing around the north east tip of Australia, the views of the barrier...

Mar 1, 2010 - Yorkeys Knob

Monday 1st March – Day 51 Tender boat again this morning, which took us to Yorkeys knob, and yes it was named after a Yorkshire man, the knob part is the area of land. This is a very busy area, which is all relatively new. They are trying to encourage more cruise ships to call. We were then taken by coach to the Sky rail Cableway station. 33 towers take you up and over 7.5km of the rainforest canopy, giving you sweeping views over Cairns, and the Coral Sea (incl. Arcadia.) It was breathtaking, the sights, sounds and smells were brilliant,...

Feb 6, 2010 - Kota Kinabalu

February 6, 2010 We had another early start today in order to travel for about two hours to Mt. Kinabalu National Park, Malaysia’s first World Heritage site, within sight of the mountain, Malaysia’s highest peak at 4094 meters. We saw the top of the mountain at intervals along the way, but its peak was obscured by clouds, even though the sky was a beautiful blue. Kota Kinabalu is in the state of Sabah, part of Malaysia, the third country of Borneo; the other two are Brunei and Indonesia. Many of the people are of Chinese decent, but there...

Nov 22, 2009 - Kota Kinabalu

Since the last time I wrote (an email). I got on my flight to KK. The flight was a bit delayed but no major drama. Got to the hotel and they had managed to stuff up my reservation not updating my last change were I canceled the first night. But managed to get it sorted. My phone managed to work and the coverage has been good which is a suprise. So i called Paul and after putting away my bags we went to a big food court place where we had a few beers. Paul the night before had had a few beers there and then gone out with the staff to some...
