Jan 2, 2011 - New Years Eve Penang!

Marika and I spend one last day at the Cameron Highland. We did an extensive bush walk on a trail that I think was no long a trail as it was really tough and not on the newer maps... We hiked to the top of the mountian and on the way down we were using trees as ropes, as we hiked down what was very steep, slippery trail- It was nice (and challenging!) to be out in the cool fresh air and get some good exercise! that night a kind Malaysian man Krishna Invited us around for dinner to teach us to cook a vegetarian Indian dish... It was so...

Dec 13, 2010 - PENANG ISLAND

Penang is great! There is heaps do and see here and the people are friendly and helpful. Moa, Emil and Tobias- all from Sweden- along with Bennie, Simone and Marcin- from Gemany and Poland -went for a stroll around the streets of Georgetown yesterday. We started with brunch in the Chinese district- yum cha! Was delish! I booked into a backpackers directly across the road from where I stayed the previous night- with exactly the same name. We then went to the Penang Museum. It was so interesting to see all of the different cultures that have...

Dec 12, 2010 - Penang

Well, here is the adventure part of backpacking.... We spent 7 hours on minibuses to get from ao nang to penang to catch a ferry tomorrow to Medan, Indo. and the company that runs the ferry has gone bankrupt. So now we are "stuck" in Penang. However we already have a plan... first drink beer... then get on the 9:30AM flight from here to there... we get there faster and its only $50 each, kinda out of budget but what are ya gunna do...

Dec 11, 2010 - On to Georgetown, Penang

The weather was magnificent yesterday at Pangkor that the crew from Nazri Camp went for a wander a further down from the Coral Bay- after some rock hopping and some jungle bashing we found a gorgeous little bay in between two great big gray boulders and se up for the day. It was like our own little beach. I hiked my camera all that way, alas, I was so engrossed in my book, I only took 1 photo. Silly me. there was banter about a having a BBQ for dinner- Lucy from France was going to go into town and pick up some fish, squid, chicken fruit...

Nov 8, 2010 - Penang

Nov 6, 2010 - Penang

I arrived in Pinang at 11 in the evening and most everything was closed. It's a good thing I booked a room ahead of time. Even the desk manager said he waited up for me to arrive. The next morning I went on a walking tour of Georgetown and Fort Cornwallis. As I was touring around, I had to think, The British are a "non violent people" but is there any where they have no occupied? I just left Hong Kong, the Brits were there, Arrived in Pinang the Brits were here. The Brits build fort Cornwallis in 1786 and used it to protect the island from...

Oct 30, 2010 - Penang

Day 1: We had along taxi drive to Kuala Lumpur airport which took around an hour, bloody to long. We arrived in Penang after a short flight and went for a wonder around the streets near our hotel, but we got very hot and bothered so decided to go back to the hotel. We went to go to a Chinese near by but the service was poor, so we ended up walking out. We then went on to Upper Penang road and had some food there. This place was a good area for bars and clubs. We went to a few bars and then found a good place to watch the Arsenal game in, we...

Jun 30, 2010 - Penang Island, snake temple, etc.

We took a 5 hour bus ride to Penang Island. We really enjoyed Penang, probably our favorite place. We stayed on the 12 floor of a hotel that looked out at the water, but was in the city of Georgetown. The architecture of the buildings here is unique and they protect the old buildings here. Mohan's friend Kah Hock took us around to different places to eat and see.

while corinna (a german diving instructor from thailand) went back to work, robin and i made our way up to penang. the hostel we stayed in was absolutely lovely...every hostel should be like this: aircon ( on fridge temperature ;-)), very clean, quiet, but still nice communal area to meet people! as there was a free shuttle-bus going around georgetown, that's what we did! followed by a walk through chinatown and little india...where we found our dinner as well! again...little india=vegetarian heaven! the next day we got a bus out to kek lok...

Apr 23, 2010 - Penang and Langkawi

After escaping the riots we had a short hop to Penang. As this had now turned in to our honeymoon we treated ourselves to a couple of nights in the Hard Rock Hotel in Batu Ferringhi (perhaps this was the onset of an early mid life crisis)! We were hugely impressed with the fantastic pool - the best we've encountered so far and a great beach front location, and the biggest and best burgers ever! On the 1st night we visited the night market and ate cheap grub. The only downsides to Penang are the jellyfish in the sea and the high tax on the...

Mar 25, 2010 - Penang, Malaysia; March 25, 2010

Hotter than hot & almost 100% humidity, the "sisters" are doing a number on the length of time we can stay outdoors or in the sun, making touring or exploring uncomfortable. Millions of people live & work in these climes & seem to adapt to the extremes we find uncomfortable and unbearable.........but us "wimpy" tourist are not adjusting well to the equatorial climates. We arrived in Penang by 08:00 & was able to offload by 09:00 for the 1st tours. Ellie's day in Kuala Lumpur was enough to make her want to stay in the comfort of the air...
