Apr 4, 2016 - Penang

April 4, 2016, Penang Breakfast at our (Red Rock) hotel is not catered to western appetites. Lots of rice, noodles, soup, vegetables, etc. There is white bread and scrambled eggs. At 9 am we are being picked up by Steven, our driver, with a minivan for our half day city tour. The heat and humidity is already oppressive. Fortunately the sun is not shining. We drive through the city and Steven proves to have a wealth of knowledge of Penang. He was born here. He points out a lot of buildings, schools, temples and businesses. Penang has a large...

Apr 3, 2016 - Krabi to Penang

April 3, 2016, Krabi - Penang We carry our luggage down to the lobby and have a very bland breakfast - not worth the money we pay for it. Two of our group members look very pale this morning - one has diarrhea and the other vomited half the night! A real happy, healthy bunch we are! The drive to Penang starts at 8:30am. We settle into our minivan (with air conditioning!)for the long haul - 9 hours. The surroundings are not particularly exciting to look at, but the towns we drive through give a nice street-view of life: shops, markets, some...

Mar 13, 2016 - Georgetown Penang

Penang was so less crowded & frenetic than Kuala Lumpur. Yes, there were lots of citizens & tourists moving about, but in a more relaxed, enjoying the moment manner; not frantic, aggressive 'gotta get there/it now'. Speaking of getting there from Bukit Fraser - we had the choice of a 9 hour taxi, bus, ferry combination journey or a 2 hour taxi ride back to K.L. & a 1 hour direct flight. We chose the taxi/flight option, and the flight cost $12 each !! Fire Flyz is a new discount airline in the S.E. Asia region that really is a true bargain....

Feb 16, 2016 - Penang

We had the morning to ourselves & went for a short walk along past where a large cruise liner was disgorging it's hundreds of guests. We watched the taxi drivers & tour sellers milling round them like flies round a honey pot. Gabby & her dad picked us up at midday & we had another little tour round before lunch. After lunch we went to look around an old Chinese house which has been turned into a museum of sorts. The owner has collected masses of furniture, clothing, jewellery etc and set them out in the old house. It probably wouldn't have...

South East Asia 2016

Feb 15, 2016 - Heading To Penang, Malaysia

Up early & off to the coach station to catch the 9.15am to George Town, the capital of Penang Island. We stopped off on the way at an Indian cafe for a breakfast of roti & Dahl. Made a change from from our hotel breakfasts. Our coach was called an Aeroliner & the seating was very comfortable with seatback entertainment screens & leg rests. We waved goodbye to Joan & settled back to enjoy the four hour trip. It has been a lovely weekend & we are so grateful to have to Joan for her marvellous hospitality. To top it all she had arranged with...

Nov 19, 2015 - Penang - George Town

On Route to Penang – 18 November 2015 Up early this morning as we are taking the 9:00 a.m. bus to Penang from Kuala Lumpur. I’m getting very good at packing. I know exactly what is in the bag and whether something is missing. Can pack everything away in less than 10 minutes. We left our friendly little hostel this morning with some sadness. With only 12 rooms which surround an open courtyard covered in astroturf – and a few desolate lawn chairs under umbrellas – there are few guests and no parties. The young Indian men who worked there were...

Mar 5, 2015 - Entry 18 - Eat, Sleep, Sightsee, Rest - Repeat

It's been just over a month & Malaysia has been the perfect destination to ease our way into the rest of the year. She has made us feel welcome with the familiarity of Thailand & Bali by her heat, humidity, endless supply of street food, fresh fruit & coconuts. Currently its 31 degrees with 71% humidity. Today has been cooler than the norm. Liters of water & and air conditioning have been essential for our sanity over the past few weeks. I have lost track of time. We are both trying to rewire ourselves to sleep when we're tired and wake up...

Feb 1, 2015 - 1 February

Ok, this hotel has had the worst wifi ever, so getting picture onto this site has been a bit of a pain. When I've been able and have had wifi in a cafe or bar, I've added some here and there - just to trick you, you understand :) 31st January Nothing to report except we sat on a bus for one and a half hours there and the same back. Wasn't particularly interesting when we got there but the journey was enlightening. We'd thought that Penang wasn't built up except around the city area. Yes it is....it's so built up. There's loads of high...

Jan 30, 2015 - Botanical Gardens

Well. Had a swim before going out in search of breakfast and then on to the botanical gardens as planned. Dropping our towels off at reception on the way out, we met the manager. A really interesting man who engaged us in conversation for a while suggesting places to visit. We're going to the war Cemetary tomorrow and then on to a little village where they make nutmeg necklaces? We went up the road to where we had dinner last night because they had breakfast in the menu....don't open till 11:00am. What? So walked up towards the bus...
